About Us

The Bernat blog includes musings from our fantastic bloggers about Bernat Yarns and Patterns. It’s an opportunity to interact with other yarn-lovers and find inspiration.

  • Michelle (aka MichelleCrochets) is a brown eyed right-handed mom to a 7 year old blue eyed left-handed girl and is married to a blue eyed left-handed English teacher.  Everything in her house is “backward” and full of books but after 12 years of marriage, she barely notices it anymore.  And with 10 tote bags full of working crochet projects, can’t really complain.  Michelle has been crocheting since she was 8 – taught by grandma, naturally!  She taught herself to knit about 5 years ago, but decided that crochet just makes more sense with one hand for hook and one for yarn.  Her spare time is consumed with home improvement – as the daughter and granddaughter of carpenters and electricians, is it any wonder?
  • Teresa (aka Teresaknits) is a mother, wife, writer and knitter. She actually enjoys long car trips with her two young kids because it usually means uninterrupted knitting time – that is, unless she is behind the wheel. She tries to focus her efforts on only one project at a time, but is considering buying more sets of needles so that she can have several knitting projects going at once.
  • Kristin (aka KristinR) is a homemaker, mother and wife who loves the fiber arts. She crochets, knits, and spins, and loves to try new things. Kristin has been crocheting for 18 years, knitting for 4, and spinning for 2. She works part time as a special needs photographer, inspired in part by her beautiful daughter who has Autism. Her hobbies outside of knitting include writing, reading, photography, scrapbooking, sewing, quilting, and cooking. She longs for the day that she can have her own farm and fiber animals, with enough space to garden and play with her family. Kristin loves to listen to audio books while she works, and enjoys trying new patterns and yarns.
  • Jen (aka JenWknits) is a busy mom who always finds time to knit!  Her knitting projects and yarn stash often threaten to take over the home that she shares with her husband, her 2 daughters and her dog.  She is a freelance writer by day (and often night) and she always has multiple projects on the needles to fit any moment that she can squeeze into the day.  She can be found knitting socks and mittens while waiting at the bus stop and knitting sweaters and afghans after the children have gone to bed.
  • Dina (aka DinaPurls) is a city girl living in the country with her two boys and a husband.  Someday she’ll have a cow, pigs, some chickens and sheep of course.  Right now she’s biding her time playing with some sticks and string, happily stealing knitting moments when she isn’t working, keeping house or running after the boys.
  • Sandy (aka Shandeh) has been knitting since 2003, and can’t imagine what she did with all her free time before then. Now, her life is CONSUMED with yarn, knitting supplies, knitting websites, knitting books and patterns, online knitting friends, charity knitting, and shopping at every yarn shop and craft store she finds. In the midst of all that, she actually knits. To pay for her knitting habit, she works as a performing musician, and teaches piano lessons. Her husband and grown children require some attention occasionally, but they know to wait patiently until “the end of the row” before making their requests.

I have been a member of the Bernat website for almost two years. In the past two years we have been blessed with three beautiful grandchildren and one on the way so I have been busy keeping up with special projects for each. I enjoy receiving the email newsletters and look forward to being a part of the crochet-along since crochet is my favorite thing to do.

I am looking for a circular Bernat put out in the early 1970′s of patterns for man’s pullover and a woman’s cardigan fisherman sweater patterns. They also had a circular for boy and girl fisherman sweaters. Does anyone know how I can get these? I’ve lost my copies. I was hoping Bernat had an archives section so I could try to locate them. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  12. Louise Schmidt says:

Satin — oh I love this yarn… it is lovely to work with, feels good and looks great. However… why does it split so much?? I have to be very cautious when drawing the stitch. I still love it but really.

    Cheers to all

    • Shandeh says:

Try using different needles or hooks. Sometimes, that makes a big difference. I know it helps me a lot, with my projects.

  13. Katherine in Iowa says:

I’m not sure who I should dirrect comments to about the website in general, so I thought I would start with you guys. Would it be possible to include diagrams with the finished measurements for the sweater patterns? It would make choosing the correct size so much easier. If I just go by chest size, they are usually too small since my son is a “bean pole”. I would like to be able to choose size based on finished back and sleeve lengths. Thanks!

  14. Lori Lisak says:

Hi there: I want to let you know that I am thrilled there is a Bernat website and blog. I worked at Bernat’s in Uxbridge MA in the 70′s and as far as I am concerned, it was the best yarn to work with! Working at Bernat’s was a family tradition; my mother worked there for over 20 years; my dad, three brothers and sister also worked there. I know work with a woman who worked there when I was there and my boss’s mother was a Bernat person also! thanks for sharing and I do have old pattern books and so do my friends.

    • shandeh says:

Hi there Lori! So nice to hear from you here in the Bernat Blog. I knit a new project for Bernat every month, and post about it here. Bernat is definitely a wonderful company to work with. I have lots of old Bernat pattern books too, and some of the older yarns as well! :)

  16. Shawn says:

    Hello,
I throughly enjoy knitting with Bernat yarns. In the past month I have knit a hat with mittens and a little crown cap all with Bernat yarn. I sent the little crown cap to New York for “Caps for Good”. I have been trying to knit the “Garden Pinwheel Blanket” for two days. I start off good then encounter problems after the fourth triangle. Where could I find detailed description and hopefully pictures of to make this pattern? I look forward to a reply, Shawn

The centers look beautiful but the border is a little up and down, ie doesn’t lie as flat as I would like……………..any ideas on this…………..ieknit the border with a smaller needle or have any others had this problem.

    • Audrey says:

Is it OK to ask a ‘how to’ question in this blog? I am a beginner in the world of crocheting. I need to understand some instructions regarding a Bernat pattern for baby booties.

    • bernatyarns says:

Questions on how to do specific stitches or techniques are welcome on the blog. However, if your question is about a specific Bernat pattern, we have a great pattern support department that can give you individual help. just send an email to inquire@bernat.com

  23. Elaine Murphy says:

Can any of you give me more clues as to how to attach the collar to the Roving cardigan? All it says is knit it and attach with no reference as to what matches up with what. I am very sad to be stuck at this point. Also – any recommendation as to what to use to sew it together – the Rovaing yarn shreds and has me growling, but it is the right weight for the seams. Please help.

    • bernatyarns says:

Hi Elaine – you can use a different yarn in a similar color to seam the collar. Any multi-ply yarn such as Bernat Super Value would be ok. It doesn’t have to be the same weight as Bernat Roving.

What pattern specifically are you referring to? Can you link to the pattern or give the pull pattern name? Is it a book pattern or an online pattern?

    Hello all,

I have inherited a project from a beloved grandma and ofcourse, she didn’t believe in using patterns. I am completely new to crochet and knit and cannot understand what is happening. Is there any help site or some sort of tool/application that I can upload a photo and it would read and provide me a pattern?

Thank you for any help you can provide, happy holidays to all

Hi all – I would say that I am an intermediate crochet/knit person who recently has taken a little stash of saved $ bought a Berndt pattern book – an “easy” classified “fingerless glove” crochet pattern -only to be “LOST & utterly CONFUSED” joined the Bernat website looking for help, google for help and YouTube help – anyone know where I could find help, or perhaps its the way it is written and my understanding or actually misunderstanding in this case …what’s wrong with me??? Please please please help

While crocheting a beautiful baby afghan and about 3/4 finished, I ran into a knot in the yarn, after the knot the yarn was a different texture and I can’t finish my gift.
Lot # k1992 1112, 100% acrylic. I have several hours put in the piece.
    Please help.
    Thanks

  29. For may years I have been happy with Bernat products. Recently however I purchased Softee Baby and have been dissatisfied with it. It snags, and the strands separate. When crochetting and pulling a strand through a loop, the strand separates and only part of the strand is pulled through. This makes it necessary to undo the stitch and repeat it. Needless to say, this is causing me to take a lot longer to finish my project. It is also very frustrating.

I’m so sorry to hear that, Janice! If you’d like, I’d be happy to pass on your email address and your comments to our Quality Assurance department. I’m sure they’d be happy to help you resolve this!
