Drew’s the youngest of eight kids and come from a very crafty family. His daddy, the ex-marine WWII veteran was an amazing artist and crocheter. His mom crocheted too! Each of his siblings do crafty activities in some combination of crochet, knit, quilt, woodwork, cake decorating, cross-stitch, just to name a few.
About five years ago he started a little blog because all his friends were starting blogs of their own. He wanted his to be about his favorite hobby which happened to be crochet. He called it The Crochet Dude and used it to show pics of the projects he was working on.

One thing led to another and before he knew it he was designing knit and crochet patterns full-time. Drew has nine books published to date, appeared in four seasons of the PBS TV show Knit & Crochet Now as the crochet expert, and has a line of his own signature hooks and tools available nationwide.

BY (Bernat Yarns): What’s your favorite type of crocheted item to design and why?
DE: Without a doubt my favorite things to design are purses. I love the challenge of designing the structure and functionality with the end result still being cute!
BY: What’s your favorite piece of crochet advice?
DE: Always use yarn that you love. If you aren’t in love with the yarn then it makes it harder to be in love with your project! There are no happy endings to unhappy journeys.
BY: What’s your favorite Bernat yarn?
DE: I’ve used Bernat in many of my books and I’d have to say that my personal fave continues to be Bernat Bamboo. I just love how it drapes and feels as I’m crocheting with it. And the colors are just amazing; very natural and relaxing!
Feeling inspired to get working on your next crochet project? One lucky reader will win a set of The Crochet Dude Ergonomic Hooks! Just comment on this blog post and tell us what your favorite crochet technique is, and you’ll be entered to win! I enjoy cables.
I have recently learned Intarsia, Oh my gosh it took me months to finally get to where I was satisfied how it looked, the pattern was from freepatterns.com and called Desert Oasis. I was ready to jump off the roof with the difficulty level. There are tutorials for tiny pics to incorporate but this was a challenge!
I have a couple of your hooks with arthritis and fibromayalgia it makes it so much easier to hang on to. I get one on holidays from friends I am on #3!
Good for you, keep up the great work. Congratulations on new interview, nice to be appreciated.
Sincerely
Marion
I love making cowl or infinity scarfs…especially with Bernat Satin…I love the sheen and drape. Thanks so much Drew for your wonderful tutorial videos.
I just started learning to tunisian crochet. I love it. It gives such a different experience, and is making my variegated yarns look extra lovely.
I like making crochet lace.
I love to do felted hats and handbags using either crochet or knitting techniques.
I love to find a pattern with enough repetition that I can get into a “zone” while crocheting it!
I love to crochet amigurumi, so my favorite technique is the magic ring!
I love to make knee covers and leg warmers for our area senior care centers. I like to do granny square combinations
I am really enjoying crocheting an old-fashioned ripple afghan, but with new fresh colors!
I love the BEADED BAG (just not wild about the color) and can’t wait to try it! Maybe in blue or purple…
I love the beaded bag……maybe in a royal blue ?
I just discovered crochet bobbles – fabulous!
I love the crochet pineapple lace pattern and broomstick lace.
I started a round tablecloth with that pineapple lace pattern. It is the second one I an doing. It took me a full year for finishing the first one, Let’s hope i will be doing # 2 faster since I am now at my retreat time.
I love any pattern that incorporates post stitches (including cables). I didn’t even start doing post stitch till I had been crocheting for years! But now I love the textured look it gives to any project, and it’s so easy. I also want to say that I am in love with Drew’s Artesia Zigzag afghan pattern and can’t wait to try that one.
I am learning Tunisian crochet and want to learn interlocking crochet next.
I like to do double-end hook crochet. I crochet a lot of blankets for Project Linus.
Drew, I love your beaded clutch, and am looking forward to making it. I’ve an avid crocheter, and love patterns that I can complete in a few days. This pattern will make beautiful gifts for my daughters! Thanks so much for sharing!
I love crochet of any kind but mostly do kids and baby sweaters that use cables as well as just ordinarly sc and hdc stitches.. I have learned a trick to keep edges neat when you turn and crochet 2 for a hdc or 3 for a dc. When I about to make a turn I simply ch 1 and turn and then hdc or dc in the first stitch. It makes a nice straight edge and a nicer finish. Give it a try.
I like working with the shell stitches.
I’m still learning crochet and my favourite technique is the magic ring to start a project in the round – but pretty much because my tension for starting with a row of stitches isn’t perfected yet.
Those ergonomic hooks look amazing!
(If you need contact info, my email is: ennadoolf AT gmail DOT com )
I love to make granny squares out of left over yarn. I’ve been doing this off and on since college and I have almost enough to make a coverlet for our king size bed! It’s fun to look through them and remember all the special projects that I’ve make for friends, family, children and grandchildren.
I love free form type granny squares. It lets me mix up different types of yars to come up with some very unique looking finished products.
My favorite item to crochet are baby blankets, hats and layettes.
My crochet skills are very limited, but I would love to learn to crochet lace – especially for edgings and collars!
i enjoy using the afghan/tunisian stitch and am delighted when i find new variations on the stitch. Over the years i have made a few afghans using the stitch….
I love it all but especially enjoy afghans and edgings around washcloths and towels. Crocheted edgings can take a plain towel and develop its personality, And afghans are the perfect gift for a loved one.
The half double crochet stitch in all its simplicity!
I love post stitches in all forms.
I’m a newbie so my favorite is anything that I finish correctly!
Not sure I have a favorite, but really like doing anything with pineapples! BTW, have used Drew’s hooks and they are AMAZING!!! Thanks so much for inventing them!
I love learning new stitches what ever they may be.
I love the afghan stitch. It is now called something else. I also enjoy cable stitch.
I will try just about any crochet technique. I am trying out Tunisian crochet right now.
I’m currently crocheting beds and toys for the cats at my local animal shelter. I’m enjoying crocheting in the round, learning how to increase and decrease, and learning how to add fun embellishments onto the toys, such as mice ears and tails!
I just learned how to Foundation SC, HDC, DC and I so love it for starting projects. No more thin little chains to try to work with. But I must confess that my favourite stitch is the crocodile stitch, I loved making little trees with it for christmas
I like to put a fancy finished edge on simple things like a scarf to totally change the look.
I have been crocheting since I was 9 and I taught myself how, so I have been crocheting for over 50 years. I have several crochet buddies at work. We share different techniques and types of yarn. My favorite stiche is a “shell stitch”. I love tunisian crochet.
I like to try lots of different techniques, but amigurumi is still my favorite
You can create something cute in a really short time, and they make fun gifts.
I am wanting to learn the afghan stitch. Need to study the tutorial on You Tube.
I’m using a Tunisian crochet technique for a ruffly scarf and it works great. Looking forward to trying other Tunisian crochet items.
I am experienced with crochet but I am branching out into knitting. Just finished my first hat with a circular needle and it looks good!
I’ve started playing with Crocodile Stitches and am having some fun with it! Nest is Bavarian Crochet if I can wait that long. Might have to work with both at the same time…
I have not done whole lot of different crochet stitches yet, but I have started experimenting with tunisian crochet. I also like single crochet… a lot!
I like using crochet borders to finish any crocheted or knitted project.
I love the fact that men take to crochet too, and make a name for themselves. One feels happy that crocheting has become so versatile and wonderful with all those beautiful yarns to choose from.
i love crocheting granny squares. There are virtually hundreds of designs in granny squares and more yet to be added. What a wonderful world it is with so much crocheting to do!
I have just recently become interested in Entrelac and Bovarian crochet. Do you plan to use either technique in any of your future patterns? I really wanted to download the pattern of your afghan using the mulitcolored yarn but found no link to download it. Love your patterns.
I am experienced with crochet but I am branching out into knitting. Just finished my first hat with a circular needle and it looks good! My favorite crochet pattern is an afghan for babies made with a shell stitch.
My favorite crochet technique is JAYGO – I would love me some of those hooks:)
I love aran crochet – cables and lots of texture.
I have very limited crochet skills. I do the basic for my blankets I love to make.
Simple stitches with extraordinary natural yarns are my favourite, like a cowl done in a yarn with the addition of angora and silk. It is warm, light and beautiful.
My favorite design to crochet is the pineapple pattern. But, as long as I am crocheting I am happy. I love to make hats and scraves which I donate to the school that my daughter teaches at. I also, love to make lap throws to give to friends or someone that my friends know that is going thru medical treatments.
My favorite Bernat yarn is Satin. It makes the softest items for those hats, scarves and afghans that I give away.
I’m trying to learn to crochet, so my favorite thing is to keep practicing the different sc, half dbl, dbl, tre. Over and over.
Especially when i come out with the proper number of repeats at the end!!!! 8-D
I love to crochet baby afghans and stuffed animals for children
I love the look of a variety of granny-type squares but I get frustrated at all the ends to weave in! My absolute favorite project is slippers because slippers are like chocolates–one of the great, comfortable pleasures in life.
I love cables and raised stitches that give added texture to a piece of clothing.
I love tunisian crochet and lace!
I’ve just started crocheting again. I love starting something that is new to me and is going to be a challenge.
Through the years crochet has remained my favorite craft because of the flexibility, freedom to create as you go, and portability. I travel a lot and crocheting has been my comfort, my way of meeting people, and in a way, part of a memory of where I had been when I made the item.
I am a self taught crochter. I will tackle all most any pattern or technique. Some successful, some not.
Thank you for all your instructions Drew They are very clear and easy to follow.
I’m currently crocheting kitchen scrubbies and washcloths – I love it!
I’m going to teach my granddaughter to knit and crochet; she’s been asking, so it’s time! (it makes it a bit more of a challenge as she’s a lefty and I’m right handed)…..but as with every other thing we have learned together – we will do it!!
Have your granddaughter sit across from you as you teach her; that way she’ll see what you do and mimic it.
As a self-taught lefty, as a child I would hold the diagrams in instruction books up to a mirror, with the mirror facing toward me – it reversed the image.
I love crochet lace. My favorite project is making scarves for myself and for gifts.
My favorite things to crochet are afghans and baby blankets with interesting patterns.
My favorite is v stitches – great for baby blankets in the south. The added bonus is that it works up very fast.
I’ve picked up my hooks a number of times and tried to work on something in the last year but I never get far before my arthritis becomes a problem. I the special hooks might be the answer to my problem and would let me start making things again for my children and grandchildren. I love making clothes, scarves and blankets and just about anything I can for them all, especially using a lacy type pattern.
I have been enjoying finding and learning new techniques er stitches,
I find that making scarves is the best way to learn with a nice result,
Recently I have done Broomstick lace, and I plan on learning Entrelac Tunisian– I have been making scarves while learning Tunisian stitches other than the basic stitch. I also gave knooking a try, it’s OK but takes as long as regular knitting which was why I quit knitting( that and the wonderous variety of crochet stitches)
Right now I am working on a reversible modified Sweetheart stitch scarf
hmm I guess that’s more different stitches than “techniques”
I am somewhat of a beginner. I love all crochet but have done quite a few things lately using Tunisian.
I would love to make myself a cardigan. Finding the right pattern will be the first challenge.
My current favorite technique is adding lacy edges to hats. Each one is unique and the finished effect reminds me of fashions from the 1920′s.
I really like to crochet, however I enjoy knitting too. I am just finishing 2 baby sweater out of Baby Sport, for the twin daughters our friend Charles, is adopting. They are each a variegated with pink in them. I have to mail them to Washington D.C. I will do that this afternoon so they have them for Easter.
I live in Mexico, I learned to crochet like 3 years ago after 15 years of knitting. I did this with the specific objetive to learn how to make amigurumis. I love make them as gifts and I love the happy faces on the people when I give them a litle amigurumi cup of coffe or an apple. After I learned to crochet, a whole new world of possibilities opened to me. I colaborate with a fundation that helps girls with alimentary disorders and I have talked to them about “the crochet dude” to motivate them to never stop pursuing whatever they love to do. I just wanted him to know that. Thanks.
For me it is all about the yarn. It has to feel wonderful. I can imagine what it should be in a finished product, so I try different stitches until it looks and feels right. I do crochet (and sewing), but want to learn to knit. My favorite stitch is probably tunisian.
I like to crochet hats and mobius scarves, also jewelry such as crocodile stitch bracelets with beading.
I’m planning on making a crocodile stitch purse. Drew’s advice is spot on when he says use a yarn you love.
I crochet barbie dresses and can add small pearls and beads as I crochet.
I am a newbie and am still learning tricks of the trade but absolutely love the HDC stitch! Its the first one I learned after the single crochet.
I love to do amigurumi and chart crochet.
I love all kinds of crochet.
I also taught myself to crochet about 16yrs ago,(no internet help when I 1st started I would get frustrated if my count didn’t come out and actually throw my project in the trash but in a little while I would drag it back out and try again, after many many mistakes and buying many instruction books I got the hang of it. I always pin my 1st stitch and my last stitch and count my stitches each row and keep track at all times by writing down where I am in a pattern, I also like my picture of the project to look at as I crochet along to keep me movitated, also about 8yrs ago branched out to knitting, so usually I knit something (a sweater right now) and then do a crochet project. I have crocheted many projects with whatever the pattern I like calls for (thread/yarn) I find time Every Day to crochet or knit even if it is only 10 stitches.
Tunisian crochet is my favorite at the moment! I’ve only been doing it a couple of months learning through videos and beginner books. But I absolutely love it. I was always intimitated by it until I actually tried it. It’s a quite easier then it looks. Next on my bucket list is interlock and tatting!
I like to crochet the “magic circle.” It’s great for starting projects in-the-round, so that you don’t end up with a hole in the middle.
Along with friends, I crochet charity items for preemies, new borns, nursing homes, hospitals, and shelters. Arthritis is slowing me down so I’d love a set of those comfy hooks. But, most of all, I enjoy crocheting sweaters for our little rescue dog.
Love to crochet shell and v-stitches that I can use for shawls for cancer patients.
I love learning new stitches. I really like making hats and scarves with cables.
as a beginner I’m impressed with my double crochet! its a start!
I like to do cables and anything with fpdc and bpdc, I like the texture it brings to a piect.
I love working with Bernat Baby Sport yarns. They have a wonderful line of baby yarns and rainbows of colors!
I really love Aran and Irish Crochet, and making flowers to pin on the hats I make for the local cancer center! I have seen Drew on Knit & Crochet now, and just love the patterns he comes up with!!
I’ve seen Drew on Knit & Crochet Today and am impressed with his skill and ability to teach. My current favorite technique is Tunisian crochet — and hats, of course.
I like Tunisian crochet and reverse single crochet .It makes a nice edging.
I love the granny square pattern! It’s so easy and quick to make that you can finish even a baby afghan in just a couple of days!
I love to change colours to make pictures on afghans and wallhangings.
I love the versatility of the HDC.
I love to crochet in the round so I enjoy crocheting hats and doiies!
I love the X st.And anything new i love to learn and grow as a crochter and knitter
My favorite crochet techniques are FPDC’s and BPDC’s. I love the texture it gives to crocheted fabric and it is never boring to make!

I have been crocheting for 40+ years, (since I’m about 8 years old) and love crochet cables and Aran & Irish Crochet techniques.
Drew is an accomplished crocheter, and I admire his work
I Love to crochet with a lacy resulting pattern-and admire the completed work
I have been crocheting since my teens. My favorite was a pattern using interlocking rings with 3 different edgings around the rings and then crocheted together.
I’ve crocheted since grandma taught me borders when I was 9 or 10. I learned to READ the patterns w/in the last 25 years. I crochet baby afghans for first-time grandmas, and afghans fr newlyweds and new homeowners. Ripple, V-stitch and a shell pattern are my favorite, but I won’t turn down a good cable/aran pattern to mix it up!!
My favourite crochet technique is filet crochet. I like making pictures with stitches.
I really enjoy the backwards double crochet which makes a very neat finish on some borders. Generally thinking up different borders is the fun way to finish knee rugs, scarves, and cowls.
When my aunt showed me how to do Hairpin crochet I was hooked – now with osifications affecting my pinch grip I hope to do hand crafts daily to keep this condition at bay – the ergonomic hooks seem like the best way to do this – FINGERS CROSSED – XX Anja
I love Irish Crochet, it is beautiful…but then so is all crochet.
Crocheting is one of my all time favorite things to do. It’s relaxing, yet challenging when I try a new pattern. My favorite technique is using the basic knit and purl stitches and experimenting with different ways to use them to make a variety of patterns. I’ll do this with either a variegated yarn or a solid yarn and it’s fun to see how different even the same pattern looks depending on the type of yarn used!
I would like to start learning to felt crochet. I feel it would be a great way to make bags, no holes for things to leak through and no stretching out of shape.
There is so much that I love to crochet, afghans, sweaters, shawls, hats, but I guess my favorite is stuffies. The look on my kids or any kids’ faces when they see a finished fuzzy teddy bear, or any crocheted toy….PRICELESS.
LindY
Lately, I love crocheting mats!
My favorite thing is trying something new. A friend of mine got several old crochet pieces from her Mom, who got them from her Mom, and she wanted me to try and recreate some of them. The new technique I learned was dragon curves or wiggly crochet. It involves making a filet crochet grid then crocheting hdc stiches in a “wiggly” pattern on the “legs” of the grid. Very geometric and structured, while being free flowing at the same time. Love it!!
Love you Drew, keep being my go to guy for the boys who show an interest in crocheting.
My favorite crochet technique or stitch is the half double crochet. It gives me more height than the single crochet and the warmth of the double crochet.
I love making afghans. Most I donate but the family have a lot too
I love cute little purses & would like to make this one. Please enter me to win a set of Drew’s tools so I can get started on that project =)
I learned to crochet in the last two years by making prayer shawls for my church . I started knitting them and then the ladies in my group taught me like crochet .them. It is much faster to crochet them hand they are beautiful. I like to make baby layettes and I crochet An edging on fleece blankets for the Linus project. I will be looking for your books. I would like to try to make your beaded bag for my granddaughters.
Well I’m fairly new to crocheting – I come from a family of knitters but just could not get the hang of it. My favourite stitches are still the basic sc, dc, hdc – well you get the idea! I’d like to learn tunisian…why? It looks like knitting of course! Thanks for the chance to win Crochet Dude!
I enjoy making assorted wallets, bags and wraps using a mix of backs stitches (moss stitch). I have arthritis and smaller projects are easier to work with.
I am all about the lace lately…adding it to anything and everything. Drew’s hooks look amazing. I love that he comes from a long line of crafters and is passing the passion and knowledge onto future generations
I don’t have a favorite really. I enjoy a pattern that repeats enough to let your mind wander some while working.
I agree with you, purses are the most challenging and satisifing projects to do. I’m currently crafting a book bag, wish me luck.
(though personally I find the holely ones to be tricky)
This clutch is amazing! It can be glammed up for special occasions, but with the pop of color being a booming trend this year, I would suggest go neon! The brighter the better. Making a sassy piece for everyday use. Imagine the complements!
P.s. I would say single crochet :3 there always so nice and neat.
Lately I’ve started designing little projects and I find it very satisfying. My favourite crocheting is making anything with a Victorian feel to it.
I love to try new things! Recently did a cable scarf that was fun . . . want to do some lacier types of things. Love motifs too — whatever is different and interesting!
Love crochet. Been away awhile but looking forward to getting back to it. Learned from my mom who learned from her’s. love doilies with cotton thread.
One of my favorite techniques is using the popcorn stitch. However I want to learn the magic ring and take a look at Tunisian crochet.
Check out You Tube. That’s where I learned how to make it.
My favorite things to crochet is about anything…I love to try new stitches and make a dishcloth to try it out.
I love all crochet techniques. I like the way single crochet is compact and lies flat; I love the look of front or back double post stitches; I love the dc of granny squares. I love it all! Oh yea………….I love Drew, too.
I love learning new techniques and then using them to make something unique. That is why following an inventive designer is always so amazing.
I like repairing crocheted items or figuring out how it was constructed. I enjoy crocheting bags and felting them…….still haven’t mastered the visual pattern directions but I can follow the written ones….or created my own take on something that I saw. Shawls are fun too. Let’s face it….crochet is fun.
PS I am a left handed crocheter and learned by watching my grandmother sitting across from me and later wandering the mercado in south america…watching ladies crochet while selling stuff from their stalls.
I love to crochet. It is my most favorite thing to do and have been doing it for over 40 years. My aunt got me started when I was around 11 or 12. My great grandma taught her. It makes me feel connected to them.
I learned to crochet from my Mother when I was aroung 12 years old, and as I got older I kind of got away from doing crochet. Then my Mother got sick and asked me to crochet her an afghan to keep her warm while she was in the hospital. I made her a wrap, and afghan and a bedspread during the long period of time she was in the hospital. Those were the last crochet items which I got to make for my Mother as she passed away about a year later. I have the items with me and they are the most cherished of my possesions. I will always remember the times spent with my Mother doing the craft she loved the most, and the look of surprise when I gave her the items she requested. Those things I will always be a part of my heart from now until the day I die and pass them on to my Son.
I am getting ready to teach a crochet class for beginners. I will definitely remind them to watch you on PBS. I have learned so much from you~thanks
I’m so glad to know that my 25 year old son isn’t the only guy who loves to crochet. I taught him crochet when He was about 12 and he has come up with some amazing designs of his own. He has also invented some new stitches! I love the work he does in crochet.
Tunisian has to be my favorite technique; although any time I can find time with yarn and hooks is a good time no matter what technique I employ.
Love Tunisian Entrelac!
I loved Drew in his time with Knit and Crochet Today and K&C Now. He was a very good teacher, showing how to do his craft. An episode he did on a knit scarf actually got me interested in learning to knit, and I followed his techniques. Now I am knitting all the time, though I had learned to crochet years ago. My favorite crochet technique to date is Bavarian. I like the way it looks and incorporates two colors in a very creative way.
I have just started to use the magic ring and I love to crochet afghans and baby blankets – any pattern. Might try this beaded purse!
Thanks
I really don’t have a favorite, I absolutely love crocheting. Anything and everything..I’ve tried it all and I love it!
My favorite crochet technique would be dctog stitches and making bobbles!
I found a pattern for a scarf that can easily be adapted for baby blankets and larger. It is called plain and simple scarf – can look very elegant and yet is simple and repetitive. You can also change the look by alternating colors and yet it is just sc and chain 1.
I still love all types of granny squares!
I love playing with vintage looks, currently Tunisian crochet has caught my attention.
I love to crochet practical things that people use. I have been making dishclothes, potholders, baby blankets, cat beds. I have crocheted more complicated things and I do enjoy that, but as I age practicality is winning!
I love anything with grannies!
I love filet crochet. I’ve made cafe curtains, table runners, and handkerchief edgings.
My favorite crochet technique is probably double crochet. I know it’s a basic stitch but it’s so versatile and it works up fast and neat!
I like to make fans in variegated colors. Oooh….
I like simple patterns because by the time I get time to crochet I don’t want to have to think too much
I love learning new techniques and experimenting with patterns. Bernat satin is one of my favorite yarns as well as Bernat bamboo. I have been making lots of scarves and hats this winter as well as baby items such as afghans and washcloths too.
My favorite technique changes with each project! But right now, I’m loving the double crochet 2 together to make a nice wave effect. I love using dc & hdc stitches in almost anything I do, too!
I love working motifs to create afghans. It’s perfect because I can take a motif to work on anywhere and then have a gorgeous afghan as the final product.
Love crochet!! I bought a book called How to Crochet about 35 years ago (then promptly went down and got it’s partner, How to Knit). Since the invention of the home computer, I have been able to add to my limited knowledge of both crafts, and have been enjoying my hobbies even more as my experience expands. Tunisian crochet is one of my favorite crochet stitches. So unique.
I love to work in the round. I created a pattern a few years ago to make star afghans and usually make things for family birthdays.
My fav is shell stitches so far. I self-learnt crocheting 6 months ago and I love making baby items, amigurumi and handbags.
I love lacy crochet! I taught myself crochet and knitting at a young age, but crochet was what I liked best. I picked it up again a few years ago after many years of no crochet or knitting. I’m still trying to like knitting! But I keep falling back to my beautiful lacy crochet…
My favorite technique is whatever is needed to accomplish the project I’m currently working on!
I love to make something different every. Stuffed animals are my favourite, so increases and decreases in rounds are my favourite techniques.
I love to crochet lace however, recently I have been making baby blankets for the many new ones on the way.
One of my favorite techniques is Irish crochet. Although I also really enjoy broomstick, Hairpin, Tunisian & making gorgeous lace with pineapple & filet crochet. I can’t leave out that I love making awesome cabled blankets & clothing.
My favorite crochet technique is a simple bobble pattern — I love the way it adds texture, depth, and interest to the item.
I love making patchwork afghans with granny squares. It’s a portable project and I. love arranging the squares in the “right” pattern!a
I love to crochet(keeps my fingers away from the popcorn) because it helps to keep my arthritic fingers moving.
Honestly, I love the basics–while I’ve been crocheting a long time, I haven’t started any of the fancier techniques, and am looking forward to learning some! I have found it fun to learn different “motifs” and put those together into larger pieces.
I love any pattern that challenges my mind.
I love to crochet Granny Squares. I put them together to blankets, which I donate to dog rescue shelters in Romania.
I don’t really have a favorite technique .. i just recently picked up the yarn again after many years of letting it sit idle. Had forgotten how relaxing it is to crochet and feel a sense of accomplishment. I only have a few hooks right now, but I have been working on some baby gifts for a niece who recently gave birth to a beautiful baby boy. I really enjoy your page, getting some great ideas for upcoming projects… thank you so much for your patterns and posts
I LOVE the beaded bag!!
I really like the look of filet crochet. Have started doing some Tunisian lately, also!
I love making socks and slippers so i think working in the round, increases, decreases are my favourite techniques
Love to crochet. I like pineapples and am looking for jewelry crochet patterns.
I make prayer shawls. I don’t just like one technique, and I usually don’t use patterns. I have never made the same one twice. I love to combine stitches to make my own pattern. This way every prayer shawl is totally unique, just like the people who receive them!
I enjoy making shawls and blankets using a lace stitch.
I knit & crochet. I like trying new things in crochet. I just made several hats & flowers for the hats for a friend of my daughter.Yarn crafting is fun!!
I’m a learner and I’ve just found out how to do a magic ring and I love it! This crocheting business is addictive.
I’ve always loved making granny squares because they can be as simple or as challenging
as you want. It’s great way to learn a new technique and I recently learned how to
make 3D flower squares that is made in one unit so you don’t have to sew the flower to the square
I’m using really simple stitches right now to crochet some wonderfully utilitarian pot holders!
I love all the crochet stitches…I like doing the cross stitch and the crocodile stitch, too!!
I’m a knitter, but I use a crochet cast on frequently (I’ve used it within the last 24 hours), always when I need a temporary cast on. I also frequently edge things with either backward SC (shrimp stitch) or a picot edge. When knitted edges show, they often don’t look as good as they could.
And crochet is invaluable for fixing mistakes. Why don’t you make some double ended crochet hooks that will let knitters fix garter stitch and seed stitch? I would buy them and recommend them to others!
I can’t decide between all these things as far as deciding which is my favorite, but my favorite crochet hooks are the ones you’re giving away. The hook part is smooth and works well, and the rubbery plastic is so much easier on my hands. I’m 69, and knit a lot, and anything that saves my hands is fabulous!
I love lacy and openwork patterns…
I love learning new techniques each time I try a new crochet pattern.
I love afghan crochet with cross-stitch on top. Lately I’ve been making baby cocoons, the hungry catepillar, a football and a mermaid tail.
I love to crochet baby’s and kids sweaters and clothing, afghans, anything with yarn
My favorite is always the one I’m trying to learn! For me it depends on the project–singles or hdc for some, dc for others. I love the idea of ergonomic hooks as my hands get older!
Thanks Drew for the lessons on Knit and Crochet Now!
My absolute favorite is knitting… Especially those adorable fine yarn baby things. The detail so thrilling to watch as it unfolds into something not just warm, but comfortably wearable and absolutely adorable! And I love socks. They just feel like a hug for one of the most abused body parts we own-even my kids love them (and get incredibly grumbly when they are “borrowed”)
Love the beaded purse pattern. I like to crochet with cotton thread, although I also work with yarn. When my friends travel abroad, I try to have them get yarn or crochet thread from wherever they visit. I have been crocheting since I was a young girl. My mother taught me how to crochet. She always crocheted without patterns, but I taught her how to read patterns after I learned on my own. It’s great when I visit her and we sit together in the living room crocheting. My mom is 82 years old and has always crocheted very fast. Crocheting is very relaxing!!!
I really enjoy making baby Mary Jane shoes and I really loved crocheting the mermaid tear pattern purse. It came out so pretty and I got lots of compliments
I didn’t learn how to crochet until I was 19 and then I was taught how to do a granny square and that was it. I taught myself all other stitches and how to work with thread. My favorite is the pineapple pattern and I am looking for a pineapple pattern that could be worked up in one piece to be made into and bedspread for a queen size bed.
My favorite crochet technique is making pretty crochet lace trims and edgings. I would love to learn broomstick lace and Tunisian stitch (on my bucket list!)
I love the fact that more guys are coming out about crocheting. i have a grandson that is learning to crochet and loves it. I would love to win this set of needles to someday leave them to him. My hands do not want to move like they did and these would be great when the old hands are stiff and do not want to hold the hook.
I love the crocheted “seed” stitch. It lies flat and looks very pretty. I mostly make blankets and sweaters.
I am a beginner at crochet and I love it. I want to learn to much. Right now I am working on a baby afghan. It is a very simple stitch as I want it to be almost perfect for the bundle of joy to a single mommy I don’t even know. But I feel that every baby should have something handmade.
I like basic crochet though I can do tunisian, broomstick lace, on the double and many other techniques. What I’m into right now is crocheting Doctor Who scarves.
Love baubles. I will be a grandma for the 1st time in September, so I will be doing anything baby
I am not that skilled at crochet other than the basics. But there is a lot of creativity to be had in your basic granny square. I am seeing new ideas all the time. I have tried crocheting with beads and I did enjoy that. It’s amazing how just a small little extra can make such an impact on the look of a project. One of the reasons why I love crochet and knitting so much!
I love trying different stitch patterns, so I make lots of squares, which become either facecloths or blankets, depending on the fiber.
I love making amigurumi!
I love using a foundation single crochet (or whatever size) in place of the foundation chain. It prevents the initial chain row from being too tight, and the finished edge is much prettier.
I like filet crochet – it just looks so elegant. I also like to do the afghan stitch with an afghan hook, it’s a great way to make panels and squares out of leftover yarn that can be combined into afghans and blankets. My favorite stitch is probably the good old double crochet – you can really make some time with that one!
My favorite thing to crochet is small gifts for my kids and their friends. Examples are, fruit, vegetables, play market bags, bunnies, etc.
I always make a hat with leftover yarn. Then at Christmas I find a place to donate them.
I like to crochet lace and Granny Squares.
I love to learn about professional crochet designers. I have enjoyed Drew on Knit and Crochet Now when our PBS station carried it. I also like many of his patterns. Right now I am working on some crochet afghans for charity and knitting some socks.
I love using ruffle yarns to crochet beautiful scarves.
My favorite technique is anything I can do without thinking too much.
I crochet as a therapy for panic attacks and it helps to just be able to work like a bunny and let my fingers go as fast as my brain does. Usually it’s big projects (afghans, blankets), but right now I am playing with headbands and flowers, hoping to be able to sell a few.

Love crocheting edges on fabrics like flannel and fleece for baby blankets.
I am relatively new to crocheting and I love it! My favorite border, to date, the picot stitch.
I’m a long-time crocheter, but only the basics. I really love working on it and learning new techniques!
I love filet crochet. I just learned how to read the charts 2 months ago. I am currently working on a dragonfly baby blanket. Filet crochet is a lot easier than it looks, lol.
Love to crochet, especially scarves and hats!
I love amigurumi crochet – mostly because I like little projects that I can complete in a small about of time.
For me it has to be the chain-less foundation!
It is a life saver on so many projects that need the extra stretch around the opening!
I like to do single crochet. I make a lot of ripple afghans. working on hats now.
I love to cable crochet. I’m actually doing an afghan designed by Drew and I LOVE it. It’s got a neat chevron pattern to it, and is so simple.
I LOVE making granny squares.
I’m a knitter who would like to advance beyond simple crochet patterns/edgings. Being a lefty sometimes makes it challenging to crochet from patterns!
My favorite crochet technique is a lacey offset shells pattern. My favorite hook is a G-6. I love crocheting hats out of my handspun worsted.
Right now I’m making a crochet cable afghan, so that’s my favorite. I also like making floral granny square or hex motifs for use in a variety of projects.
My favorite technique is the waffle stitch. It work up fast and makes warm afghans and scarves.
My mom tried to teach me to crochet when i was younger did go so well. About a year or so ago i decided to try again I am teaching myself to crochet, sadly my mom passed away (one of my reasons for starting to crochet again) i have the few last pieces she made. I like the simplicity of a single crochet but learned the double crochet recently and really like to look of it.
My favorite crochet technique is making things with the pineapple pattern. I just love the way it looks, I also like the spiderweb pattern
Probably any and everything ripple and grannies! Love doing baby items!
I have so many projects and not enough time! I have arthritis but crochet to keep the joints in my fingers from locking up. They hurt but worth it! Love these crochet hooks! I am working on 2 full size checkered flag blankets and 3 scarf and hat sets and I have 2 baby blankets to make. I am a busy hooker!
I love Tunisian crochet…. Experimenting on ways to keep it from curling so much now.
I’m loving making stuffed toys at present – so my favourite trick is that magic circle. I kiss the feet of the person who came up with that! ;-D
Fabulous interview….Thank you!
I love to make granny squares. They are quick, portable, fun little projects that can be individually unique just with changing colors!
Thanks for the giveaway
I love crocheting and I love the many projects that are out there. I’ve learned to do the crocodile stitch and the Bavarian Stitch and am looking forward to trying my hand at making this hand bag for my granddaughters 16th birthday that is coming up. I have not had an opportunity to try one of Drew’s crochet hooks but would love to give them a shot. I have used the bernat softee yarn for projects so I just might have to break down and try some of the others.
RIght now I’m on a granny square kick, especially if it involves flowers. Baby blankets galore.
I love to crochet lace. Currently I am changing doily patterns into round baby blankets.
I love to use front post stitch and back post stitch. I really like the unique look it give the afghan. I also like the puff stitch.
I love making character hats, working in the round is so fun! Lately I’ve made some cute ducky and bunny hats for Easter!
I love making Aran afghans with all those lovely cables, but I also love to make delicate doilies from thread – esp. Irish Lace style ones.
I love to do sampler projects because you get to do so many different stitches. I also make hats for the children at church and use different stitches or trims. Start getting asked in Sept. what the hats are going to be like this year.
It seems like I’m always crocheting…..hook in hand and plenty of yarn. Sometimes I try to crochet in my sleep. Lol. My favorite thing to crochet are blankets. Nothing too complicated…nice easy stitches.
I like doing colorwork in crochet. I’m learning it in knit now and it’s nowhere near as neat and tidy!
I love the V-stitch. I make prayer shawls and it makes a beautiful, warm shawl.
just LOVE to learn new techniques in crochet
Just learned to do crochet bobbles and tunisian stitch
LOVING it
I love learning new stitches…I pick my next pattern for either something new for interest or mindless repeat patterns to zone out, gotta have both types for different moods… ^_^
I am in the middle of my first Tunisian afghan, and I love Bernat Bamboo Yarn. Would love a set of Drew’s hooks, they look very comfortable to work with.
I love doing geeky crochet pieces, my favorite is my Spaghetti Monster Hat!
I love crocheting with wire or other unusual items – plastic bags, pop tabs, t-shirt strips, etc. The versatility of crochet is amazing!
I love simple stitches like hdc or shell and really enjoy quick projects and baby items. Your purse design is really lovely!
I learned how to do a ‘fake double crochet’ at the beginning of a row instead of a chain 2 or 3. Makes the edges much cleaner. So if I had to choose a favourite technique, then that would be it, a fake double crochet to start a row. I learned it watching many different you tube videos and several blogs. Took a long time, so if it is something you want to learn to just keep practising and you will get there.
I am new to crochet. I had an outpatient surgery 10 days ago and have a 10 lbs lifting restriction. A friend taught me how to crochet so that I would have something to do while I am recovering. In the 10 days since my surgery I have completed a double sided potholder, a single layer round potholder, & 3 fish shaped washcloths for my son’s easter basket. I have also started a scarf and a throw blanket and purchased yarn to make a heart shaped washcloths for my daughter’s easter basket, a poncho for her, a shawl for myself, and a totebag and crochet hook case for myself.
I don’t have a favorite stitch yet but I am having fun learning how to crochet.
Tunisian I am learning along with other forms. And I think all are my favorites.lol But if i have to pick at least one Tunisian as been a favorite so far.
Love the hooks. I crochet until my hands hurt!
I don`t really have a favorite yet, I have just learned to crochet! I am inspired by everything I see in boks and on the internet, I just want to do it all! I have made quite a few things since I started, and I love it!
Love to crochet until my hands hurt.
I love hearing anything from Drew! He’s very talented and very funny! Love his patterns & this clutch is awesome!
I recently started crocheting doilies, and I love the way the picot stitches look after dampening and pinning in place. Really gives a finishing touch to the project. I am actually looking for a pattern for a doily my Mom made way back when. The doily with grape-looking clusters. Thanks, and I would love to have the complete set of Ergo Hooks…easy on the hands.
I just started making solid crochet squares and learned how to join with a raised SC join. pretty basic but looks AWESOME!
Variety is the spice of life – this holds true for any fav technique. I’m currently working on something with broomstick lace and have two projects tagged in ravelry that involve hairpin lace. I make lots of prayer shawls and use up leftover pieces for preemie hats to donate to hospitals.
I don’t have a fave technique yet. I am still learning and enjoying the process of having 1hook and a ball of yarn and creating something someone can use and love! I am on my 4th project…a waves blanket for my teen daughter that she begged me to make
I just got a pattern to make crocheted earrings. I haven’t started, but I am pretty confident that it will be one of my favorites! I love to make jewelry and anything to wear so this will just combine crochet into something else I love. I do love to make baby blankets too, no matter what the pattern. The last one I finished was a blanket with a hood. It was super simple with the softest chunky yarn and just flew by. My arthritis has slowed me down recently, but I will figure something out so I can get going again! I have to try out the earrings!
I’ve just returned to crochet after a long hiatus. I’ve discovered new techniques such as the magic circle (can’t live without it now), the foundation stitch (beautifully simple), and have a LONG to-do list of new techniques to try, including Tunisian crochet. I’ve experimented with amigurumi and loved it, made several of the Sashay yarn scarves for gifts this past Christmas, and have a granny square purse project next on my list. Crochet has come a long way since I started 40 years ago with a simple chain taught to me by my Grandma.
would love more of those hooks!
I just learned to crochet, but I enjoy Front and Back Post afghans.
My favorite crochet technique is foundation crochet. I make a lot of shawls, throws, scarves, things that start with a long chain
I love to crochet all kinds of stitches!!! I love the crochet dude facebook site and seeing all his cool things he makes! It makes me proud to show my son that even men CAN crochet!!! And they can even be REALLY GOOD at it too!
Just re-learning, so my current fave is the HDC and DC, I made so many scarves while practicing, that after I gave one to every family member, still had 10 to donate to the local homeless shelter – I love to make granny squares.
I love to crochet bags and purses, market bags and totes.
My favorite crochet is any crochet, I find I am happiest when.I co.tinue to challenge myself with new ideas and techniques.
I like to make afghans with different stitches. Used to love Tunisian crochet but haven’t done it in a while. Moved from NY to AZ and most of my needles, yarn, etc. are still in NY. Love Drew’s patterns.
I Love all of Drew’s stuff. I can’t wait to get my hands on some of his new yarn. I am sure it will be just like the rest of his line…awesome!
I really enjoy making things out of HDC’s. just really love the texture and look of the stitch.
I love trying new patterns and new stitches.
I like to take vintage insertion patterns and make narrow scarves with lace weight yarn or regular size scarves with worsted weight.
I love making crocheted accessories – like hats and scarves, socks, stuff like that.
Currently loving grannies, miters, and up-sized doilys.
I’ve become fascinated with Bruges lace and Irish Crochet.
I love the patterns and tips from “the crochet dude”
And I don’t know if the giveaway its open to Mexico but just in case I want to share that my favorite technique is “filet” but I like to make baby blankets with the crochet filet technique =)
I’m not that adventurous in crochet, but really want to be…I love granny squares used in unusual ways and love to crochet scarves and blankets for family and friends. Thanks so much for hosting this giveaway!
I’ve been crocheting for about a year and a half and am still intrigued with watching yarn magically transform as I follow a pattern. It is fun to use stitch & technique combinations that result in shapes and even three dimensional forms. Magic circle is an indispensable technique – but so are so many others! Crochet fills that need to be creative and make something with my hands and the satisfaction in watching someone wear or use an item I created is immeasurable.
I love Amigarumi! It’s so much fun!
I love learning new stitches, just learned in the last year broomstick lace, so fun to make.
I love all things crochet! It’s so much more forgiving than knitting. At present my go to stitch is a shell stitch which I use when making rainbow colored baby afghans.
My favorite crochet technique is the standing stitch to replace having to chain when moving up in rounds.
never heard of that , can you elaborate?
Hi Drew,
I love your patterns keep up the good work!!!
I have been doing Tunisian with 6 stitch diagonals recently. But I love it all, and Drew’s designs are practical and beautiful.
I love to make baby blankets and baby caps!
I like trying anything new!! I love just choosing a pattern and then learning whatever new stitches are required! Challenging myself!! (Although I’m sure I have extra grey hairs!!)
that’s awesome.. I too am trying out new things in crochet…. still learning and still find it interesting and fun:)
I like round projects like baby hats.
I love to crochet it keeps me calm and occupied !!! Thanks for all the cool patterns you come up with I love them all !!! Keep up the good work !!
I’ve been crocheting since i was 7 years old and i’m 55 now. I wish i’d thought of starting my own line first, haha. I love to make Afghans, the harder the design the better!
My cousin taught me to crochet when i was 7 and i’m 55 now. I wish i’d thought of starting my own line first! haha I love to make afghans, the harder the design the better….
Looking forward to learning the Tunisian stitch!!
My favorite technique is to top stitch using blo to create a knitted look to my work. I can’t knit, but this – I can do!
I love the magic circle and making cables with crochet!
I guess my favorite crochet technique is whichever one I am currently using….I’d love some ergonomic hooks to practice with so my hands dont hurt so bad!!!
thank you for the patterns, and the encouragement, the insights on the craft and for sharing your know how;)
I just started learning freeform crochet. I’m using it with plarn, yarn, ribbons, etc, to create purses.
I have four kids, so I love amigurumi because I make them lots of toys…they are presently demanding “My Little Pony” animals!
I grew up watching the neighborhood ladies crochet, my mom embroidered etc. but i only observed i was in too much of a hurry growing up to learn.. many offers to teach me but anyway, i have decided at my young age of 50 to learn. i found learning from you Drew very understandable and i recently made a baby blanket i only used triple crochet but my niece was thrilled. i look forward to learning more and thank you for taking your time to show us all.
I’m still a novice and the most exciting stitch I’ve learned has been the crab stitch… pretty neat
I love to crochet hats and blankets!
Love the clutch – it’s so cute! I will have to give it a try once I finish up a few of my other projects
I can never work on just one thing at a time!
Love the Crochet Dude and Bernat yarns! Drew’s designs are great and his new line of products rock. My favorite thing about Bernat yarns is all of the different textures offered. Thanks for holding this give away!
My current favorite is crocheting cables! It changes pretty often though.
i love working Tunisian and broomstick lace
I love to crochet baby items and the V Stitch is one of my favorites!
I love to make hats. The technique that I love the most is the magic circle. It makes the top of the hat so much neater.
I love the challenge of taking a hook and yarn and a pattern and ‘solving’ it! I very rarely make the same pattern twice except for dishcloths.
I love Bavarian crochet along with tunisian … I make a lot of baby items for the neo-natal units and prayer shawls for church … These hooks would come in really handy when I am in a pinch and doing an all-nighter trying to get a shawl done for Sunday morning service blessing!! Also a big fan!!
I would love to win, I only how to knit and this would be a great start to teaching myself to crochet. I don’t have a favorite crochet technique….just know how to sew up seams via crochet
I am a threadie at heart, I love pineapples. But, my very first project was hairpin lace. My mom and I made an afghan with hairpin lace when I was five years old. That afghan is still in the family 52 years later and looks as good today as when it was made.
I like crocheting cables. I really love the front and back post crochet stitches. I love to see how it all comes together to make the cables.
Thank you,
Tammy Davidson
I love crochet cables- my very first cabled scarf was Drew’s pattern and I have made it several times since.
I love making kids character hats. I love how they all start out the same and then take in a life if their own slowly.
Love the half-double crochet…….love the density of the stitch – great for an afghan……
I love this blog, it gives me insight to the people who develop these wonderful patterns.
I really like to do broomstick lace, I think it looks so soft and delicate.
I am loving the wavy ripple I am working on now!
I’m into reusable wrapping, so I have been into crocheting little drawstring bags for gifts. I’ve made them with leftover yarn, and I intent to try my hand at making them with crochet thread to make a smaller, tighter bag/envelope for gift cards.
I really enjoy crocheting afghans, and my favorite technique is anything I haven’t tried before! Now that we have the internet, there are so many new (to me) stitches, techniques and ideas out there.
I’ve crocheted many blankets over the years and am self-taught. Now with the advent of Youtube tutorials and so many wonderful new yarns, the sky is the limit! I adore Drew’s designs and am looking forward to making one of his projects, a beautiful infinity shawl, for my mom.
I love to use the reverse single crochet to finish just about every project I complete. The reverse single crochet helps the project keep its shape and adds a very nice border.
I have been crocheting non-stop for 4 years… having taught myself. My favorite stitch is hdc, and I enjoy making items for charity, especially crocheting in the round… newborn beanies, edging blankets, scarves, and wash/dish cloths.
My favorite crochet technique is filet crochet because I can make a bookmark customized with a friend’s initials
I just recently got back into crocheting, so I’ve had to relearn a few old techniques and have also learned a lot of new things too during this process of discovery. Right now my favorite crochet technique involves creating amigurumi items and figuring out from looking at a picture of something how I can turn it into something crocheted.
I have recently learned the “magic circle”. I enjoy it very much since I love making hats. I have also determined that I really enjoy modifying patterns to my liking, whether it is by color or by stitches.
I love tunisian crochet and amiguruimi!
I honestly can’t pick a favourite technique. Since picking up a crochet hook nearly 3 years ago and teaching myself with compendium books of techniques and stitches, I haven’t stopped hooking! I used to blog regularly when a card crafter only, now I never seem to have the time as there is always a project (more like 5 or 6) on the go. I’ve got granny blankets, some tunisian crochet, some patterned facecloths, a motif table runner & daisy necklaces all on the go at the minute.
I just love crochet as there is always something new to learn and experiment with. Many thanks for the pattern…..it looks like it’s going to be added to my list of on the go projects
Sam x
I love making cowls, baby blankets and afghans . I have knitted for 48 years but am new to crocheting. The latest things I’ve learned are magic circle and back post double crochet
Front post/back post stitches because it creates a nice texture.
I love all techniques or crochet. I learned from my grandma when I was only about 9 years old. there always seems to be something new to learn.
I love all techniques of crochet. I learned from my grandma when I was only about 9 years old. There always seems to be something new to learn.
I don’t know if I have a favorite technique – I like to try them all and be challenged. I especially like thread crochet and Tunisian.
I love tunisian crochet, I’ve made a few projects & look forward to learning more. Broomstick Lace is next on my ‘want to try list’! I make a lot of amigurumi, to give as gifts and donate to local children’s hospital. Crochet offers many crafting opportunities in different techniques and I like many that I’ve tried.
My favorite is crocheting lace, hairpin lace.heirloom lace, shawls made in lace as well as sweaters.
My favorite technique would be the treble stitch. A dear friend that is now deceased showed me how to crochet a toilet paper cover. From this one lesson after 25 years, I moved on to broader horizons. Crochet, Tunisian, Filet and more.
I adore tunisian crochet
I have tried Tunisian and really like it. I would love to learn Entrelac crochet.
I love to crochet everything and anything. I taught myself how to crochet at age 17 and still going strong at 63. Last few years I have made a lot of baby items for the grandbabies. Learning a new technique or working with a difficult pattern is a challenge.
You’re not alone, guy! I knit more now, but have crocheted since 1976. A couple of years ago I used the fast and fun Tunisian technique of the famous “Sunset Ruana” to make a blanket. It was the first “new” crochet I’d learned in ages, but over the decades I’ve done some of everything.
More men could benefit from handcrafts, in my opinion. It brings the relaxation we need at least as much as the prettier gender, and the usefulness and durability of handcrafted articles are superior to anything manufactured.
Congratulations on your success!
