or, How to Keep Yourself Occupied Until Clue One
There are only two weeks left to prepare for the Waverly for Bernat Mystery Afghan Knit-Along and Crochet-Along, which means you only have two more weeks to memorize the order of letters in its acronym: WFBMAKALCAL. A lot of the participants have been itching to get started, so let’s take a look and see what’s been happening.
Since announcing the Bernat Forums at the beginning of January, over 2,600 Bernat fans have signed up! There are users from the United States to Sweden, England, Australia… even South Africa! Users are getting introduced while they help one another with shade choices, hook and needle recommendations, and which blanket to make (some are even making both!).
There’s been a lot of discussion about how to keep busy until the KAL/CAL begins. Here are some ideas:
- Find your perfect gauge! A couple of weeks ago we released a Gauge Tutorial to help you figure out how to get your gauge spot-on for your afghan.
- Share your Journey to a Better Gauge with other users on the Forums.
- Introduce yourself on the Forums and tell us all a little about yourself.
- Complete any UFOs (unfinished projects) floating around your house. If you can’t find any, we suggest looking in your craft room, the corners of your closet, or under your dog’s bed (you never know…). Then you can show us some cool photos of what you made!
- Finish reading that copy of War and Peace you’ve had sitting on your night table and tell us all about it on the Reading Books thread!
- Discuss with the other Forums members about what you’re doing in the meantime!
- Take up an obscure new hobby and share your adventures in the Other Hobbies thread. May we suggest beekeeping, extreme needlepoint, or cricket?
However you decide to spend your time, you should come on over to the Bernat Forums and tell us all about it! The clues will be posted to the Forums, so it’s the best place to be if you want any information first! If you’re looking for more information about the event, check out Waverly for Bernat Mystery Afghan KAL/CAL. The first clue goes out February 15!
P.S. Are you a little behind on getting your yarn? Don’t worry, because the Bernat Shop has free shipping for orders over 50$ this week! Order before February 7 to get this deal!
Thanks Bernat for the free shipping! I had already bought the yarn for the CAL but with this deal I decided to go ahead and get the yarn for the KAL as well! Bring it!
Just wondering…does gauge really matter for this project? I know we want the motifs to be approximately the same size so they’ll come together uniformly, but I so dislike making swatches and as a tight knitter/crocheter, my motifs usually come out about the same anyway. But convince me: While I’m waiting, is there a good reason to do a gauge swatch in Waverly? (I’m one of the people making both the knit and crochet afghans.)
Agreed. I’m a tight crocheter as well. Is it truly necessary to gauge a swatch in Waverly?
I would say definitely do the gauge for a large project. With lots of projects I require a larger needle to hit gauge–but for bernat patterns I tend to be spot on. If your gauge is off in the wrong direction you could run short in yarn and not find out until you are almost finished! No one wants that.
Yes, it is important. In the one we did last year, most squares were about 8 inches but then we had a very large granny square and 4 large corner squares made out of the smaller ones. If your gauge is wrong, when you go to sewing these together, they won’t fit together properly. I ended up using a hook 2 sizes larger than suggested last year to get the right gauge so mine worked. I have since made this afghan in three different color schemes. If you have frustration making it because of incorrect gauges, you won’t want to make it again. It loses all the fun.
I would love to do this however I have no Idea what colors to get for the knitting project and if I order now can I still get 25% off the yarns…. I am a pretty avid knitter…. but would love to try something like this.
I have crocheted and knitted for over 50 years! i always have some project going. I like to knit winter scarves with the furry fun yarn. i use one strange of fur yarn with one strand of the regular worsted. This makes the knitting easier and scarf turns out heavier for warm here in northern Indiana.
I am looking forward to the CAL..ready to get started.

so where is the 1st clue? I can’t find it on this blog. Am I missing something here?!
For this event they’ll be posted to the Bernat Forums every week. You’ll find the Knit clue here, and the Crochet clue here.
I have not received Clue 1. How did I miss it? I remember that clues were to be posted 2-15 so I have been checking my e mail.
Help.
This time they’re being posted to the Bernat Forums. You’ll find the Knit clue here, and the Crochet clue here.
Stepped out of my comfort zone with the colors I have to the Mystery CAL! It will be interesting to see them come together.
Help someone! it’s the 20th and I don’t know where to look for the clue that came out 5 days ago!
This KAL & CAL they’re being posted to the Bernat Forums. You’ll find the Knit clue here, and the Crochet clue here.
Finished the first motif for clue 2. Looks nice, but had to change needle size to I. Now I have to go back and redo all the motifs for clue 1, because they are too small:(. Only found the blocking template today.
this is very difficult to find clue # two due out on wednesday, February 22,2012. Last year it pop up on the home page
This year they’re all being posted on the Bernat Forums.
Would love to knit this project but am worried about using acrylic yarn. I have a Yellow Lab and his hair seems to weave itself into acrylics. Would this work with Bernat Cottontots?
Bernat Cottontots is a medium yarn, so it should work! Just make sure you check your gauge.
