You’re officially invited to join the fans, employees and bloggers as we crochet our way, clue by clue, to a fantastic new afghan out of Bernat Softee Chunky.
How it works
The Bernat Crochet-Along is a sampler afghan crocheted in five colors of Bernat Softee Chunky. What the final afghan will look like is a mystery – you’ll have to crochet each clue as it comes out and gradually discover the final result.
Anyone who loves crochet or wants to learn is welcome. The first clues are at an Easy level, and gradually get harder. Don’t worry – we’ve got tutorials along the way to keep you learning. If you’re an experienced crocheter, you’ll love watching the clues unfold.
The first clue will be released September 22nd here on the Bernat Blog. Each Wednesday we’ll release another clue on the blog, and crocheters across the country will share experiences as we go.
For more details check out the official FAQ page with answers to all of your questions!

I want to sign up for the CAL. How do I do that?
Hi Annie – Just come back on the 22nd to get your first clue and you’re set. Feel free to comment on the blog as you go!

I’m in! I’ve been looking for a CAL to do for fun and since I’m doing a lot of crochet to help ease my arthritis and the mystery element of this sounds like a perfect one for me.
I do have one question – in the FAQs for the contest the dates given are Jan and Feb 2010. I assume they are supposed to be 2011? Or have you got access to time travel for us? LOL I’m sure a lot of crafters would love that so we could get more done.
Hi Laura – We haven’t quite nailed down time travel yet, so you’ll have until next January 31, 2011 to submit your entry.
Can’t wait to try. This looks interesting.
I’m in for the CAL!! Can’t wait!!

The FAQ says to win a prize you must submit a photo of your finished afghan by 01-31-10? I think that should be 01-31-11. Also, I ordered the yarn for this online but did not find anywhere to enter the code so I didn’t get the 25% discount.
Hi Martha – that’s right, it’s 1-31-11
I’m sorry you weren’t able to enter the coupon code! You can call the shop customer service at 1-800-351-8356 – they can hopefully help you out.
For anyone else who hasn’t ordered yet – you can enter your code on the Shopping cart page.
From the Softee Chunky page, you would select a quantity, click Add to Cart. The shopping cart will open – that’s the spot for the coupon.
Sounds like fun. I’m in.

My mom and I are so looking forward to doing this. It sounds like so much fun. We can’t wait.
I’m looking forward to this challenge as a fairly newbie to crochet! I tried to print all of the instructions about the contest and could only get the first page printed…..four blank pages + one with the Welcom and CAL Additional Questions. VERY FRUSTRATING!…..so much so, that I’m tempted to forget the whole thing! PLEASE fix your website print capabilities so contestants can print the entire 4-5 pages of instructions. I can’t even print the list of suggested yarns!!!
Hi Ginger –
I’m sorry you’re having trouble printing. If you’d still like to print out the instructions, go to http://bernat.com/CAL2010intro/
and you should have a printable version with all the details.
This seems like fun. I’m in……
I’m in and can’t wait to get started
I’m in!
Sounds like fun, I’m in.
Should be fun!
I’m in, too. I was already planning on making my niece an afghan for Christmas, and these colors are very close to what I was already considering. This HAS to be better than the afghan I’m about to finish, which has been the same stitch over and over and over in the same color. Bleh. The whole mystery of the project will be a welcome change!
Sounds like a great project to get you to the holidays. Count me in.
Count me in! I love crochet and am always looking for new and interesting projects.

what do you mean by a clue? I have never done one of these. But I want to.
A ‘clue’ is a set of instructions that has you doing a portion of the afghan. ‘Clues’ are normally without photos, and simply written. It’s called a ‘clue’ because you won’t know what it will look like until you follow the ‘instruction pathway’ to get where you are going–a finished block or set of blocks.
Sounds exciting! Count me in!

I’m in! I’ve been crocheting for about 40 years, but it’s always been a solitary pursuit. I’m looking forward to being part of a crowd (even if it’s only on the web) & to finding out what direction each “mystery clue” sends me in!
This sounds like fun!! I teach crochet and will definitely be telling all my students about this!! This will be something slow and fun to do too =) i can’t wait to see how it turns out!!

Hi
I don’t think I can get Bernat yarn in South Africa. What would be the equavalent type of yarn to use?
Thank you!
I’m not familiar with the yarns available in South Africa. You should be able to substitute a chunky weight yarn that crochets to the tension specified (11 sc and 12 rows = 4 inches (10 cm).
I’d love to join!! Can’t wait!
Sounds like fun and a challenge.
I’ll sure would like to try it. Sandi

Can’t wait till Sept 22nd ! First time for me also. It would be great to know where everyone is? I’m in Brisbane, Australia – and for those of us that are used to English patterns and not easily accessible to Bernat yarns what is the equivalent ply to Softee Chunky? – 8 ply?
I’m wondering that too – maybe closer to a 12?
Just signed up. I live in Michigan, outside of the Detroit area.
Not being familiar with Australian yarns, I can’t help you with the number of plies. Look for a yarn that crochets to the tension given – 11 sc and 12 rows to 4 inches 10 cm.
Sign me up … can’t wait. Sounds like a lot of fun.
Sounds like fun!
I’m game. By Sept. I’ll be ready to work on an afghan again. In fact my fingers are itching now!!

I’m in! Can’t promise I’ll get it all done in time–I have enough UFOs to keep me busy ’til I’m 200–but I may SO many afghans for everyone else and none for me, so it’s time I got my turn! Thanks!
This is the first time I’m doing a CAL. I have my yarn ordered already. I marked every Wed.on the calendar from Sept. 22 – Dec. 7 to check for the clue. I’m excited to get started to see what this adventure is going to look like in the end.
I don’t know how to read a crochet pattern. do you think I can do this? I once made an afgan using only double chain or double crochet. (see, I don’t even know enough to know what I don’t know…) I really want to learn.

Count me in! I can’t wait!!!
I want to give this a try – time permitting. I didn’t know about the knit one last year. I have been trying to knit – somewhat successfully and would like to do the knit afghan – the sampler would be good practice for me. I can’t locate all the clues in one location. Have they been put together as a pattern somewhere for those of us that missed out?
I wanted to try the Knit-Along as well. It was frustrting because, like you, I could not find all the directions in the listed archives. However, I figured out how to do it. Go to the Search Box at the top of this page (It’s on the right under the picture.) and type in the word “clue”. All the clue postings will show up from newest to oldest. Each clue and the seaming guide contains a PDF for easy printing or downloading. Warning: Each clue contains a picture of the completed previous clue. If your don’t want to ruin the surprise, only dowload one clue at a time.
how do i sign up for this mystery crochet? im very interested

Just in time–I was looking for a new travel project. Grandbabies all live 3 to 15 hrs away so I spend a LOT of time traveling. Can’t wait to get started; just ordered my yarn.
Ordered my wool…. looking forward to getting started!!
Wow sounds like fun.But I hate putting squares together.I hope its not that.
I used to dislike putting squares together also but found I was missing out on a lot of interesting afghan patterns, soooooo I searched the internet (great place for info) and found a few very nice ways to attach squares that make the afghans absolutely wonderful. No more whip stitch!! Maybe the CAL will have a new way of attaching the squares… maybe they aren’t going to be squares… mysteries are soooo much fun!
Sounds like fun!
I just bought my supplies although the local AC Moore doesn’t carry all the recommended colors (no Fern). I can’t wait to get started!
Can’t Wait!

Haven’t crocheted in a while so I am looking forward to getting back to it!
Has anyone done this b4? I want to know if they liked what they ended up with. I am game to try. Sign me up.
I did the Knit-A-Long and was pretty much a beginner. I had trouble with some of the terms and how to do certain stitches, but, believe me, this group will help you !! I learned SO much doing this, things I would never have tried on my own. Plus, there are videos on some utube- type places that you can watch someone do the exact direction you need help with. You can’t go wrong here, you’ll finish and have a great looking project.
The KAL was my 1st knitted project and to date my only, but I love the afghan and the clues weren’t too hard to figure out. For some of the harder stitches they had pictoral tutorials on-line. The pictures of the finished afghans are still on-line too. I think you have to search “mystery” in the blog.
I’m in! What colors did everyone pick? I chose blue heather, wine, grass, dark denim, and mauve.
This is my first time for something like this. I just ordered my yarn and can’t wait to start. I’m in Springfield, VT and love to crochet.
I am going to try this. Here is just hoping I end up having the time to do it. Sounds fun!!

I’m in! Love a challenge.
Can’t wait to start/
And ordered my yarn. I am good to go. SWEET.
Well, I have been trying to pare down the stash I already have, but I am thinking about doing this CAL. I do have a question before I order the yarn. I love Bernat yarns but have never used Softee Chunky. I wanted to make sure it is a smooth yarn and not kinky or bumpy like Homespun or Boucle — I don’t like using those types of yarn since it’s too hard to see what I’m doing. Thanks!
It’s definitely a smooth yarn – you won’t have any problems seeing your stitches. Enjoy!
Thank you, Laura! I think I am going to order my yarn when I get paid Friday. Woo hoo!
I know what you mean about the bumpy yarn, a little challenging to use.
I want to join the party!

Yes, i want to take part in the Bernat Mystery Afghan Crochet Along. I have a question. Will I need to have all five colors to make the first square? I like to use coupons in my favorite store to buy Bernat yarn but each coupon is good for one skein and coupons come out weekly. please let me know. Thanks..Shirley
Can’t wait, hopefully it will keep me interested as I have a tendency to get bored and restart projects!!!
This will be my first “anything”-along. In fact, it’s my first attempt at blogging as well. I sure hope I can keep up with both.
This sounds like fun!
I ordered my yarn today, too, and can’t wait to start. I hope it will be a nice Christmas gift for one of my sons.

am excited to try this, never done a mystery afghan before. I am going to try this in Patons Decor, worsted weight yarn with a 5 or 5.5 mm hook. It will turn out a bit smaller, but I already have 5 shades previously bought for another project that I will now use for this one. Can’t wait to start it!
Can’t wait…….finally a crochet along that I can probably finish.
Thanks!
Please sign me up.

Sign Me Up… I am so excited! I needed a project like this to help me widdle or should I say crochet away my stash. My LYS is going out of business. So naturally, I’ve gone a bit overboard supporting their final days & enjoying awesome sale prices on wonderful fibers.
I’ve never crocheted before….but am willing to give it a go! I really enjoyed taking part in the knitalong last year – it helped keep me busy when my husband was ill and I couldn’t sleep for worrying. Hope the instructions are idiot proof or I’ll struggle.
Count me in for the crochet-along. This sounds like so much fun.

Count me in for the fun.

looking forward to a fun Fall project.
I am in, but is there any way you could let us know before the 22nd which yarn we need to start with? I want to join but can’t buy all the yarn at one time, so what would be best to purchase first?
The first three clues use Contrast A, D and E. After that you will need the other colours.
Laura
thanks for your prompt reply looking forward to the fun!
I am very excited to do this I’v never been a crochet-a-long.
It’s wonderful to hear that other contries also get your news letter and I agree with the other lady I would love to here where everyone is from, that would be fun don” you agree?

just sooo excited to find something for the crocheter. Ordered my yarn online as yarn shops in our area are limited in selection. Less than a month to start!!
I want to join the Bernat afghan crochet group. Do you have to buy all your yarn at one time. What kind of yarn do you need and how much?
I looking forward to the CAL. Never did anything like this before and it sounds like fun. I just hope I finish the baby afghan and sweater set I’m making for my new granddaughter before it starts either that or I will be going back and forth between the two. Can’t wait to get my supplies but waiting for pay day.

Just read all the comments. I think it’s exciting to do this with people from other countries. The colours suggested are out of my usual colour zone, so I’m going to give them a try. Goodbye pinks and corals, hello nature.

loved the mystery knit along last year. looking forward to the crochet along!
What a great idea, I’ve heard of mystery quilts and some kind of
way I missed the knit along last year. I was probably busy making
a Hogwarts scarfs or some other project I designed. I knit and crochet and I’m really looking forward to this. It’s a mystery and I’m all in, I’ve never done an afghan where I don’t know what it will look like, this is so cool!! I’m going to invite my two students to join and so we can do this together. I already ordered my yarn, the colors picked were just wonderful.
my bff and i are in different cities and we’ve both decided to do this project together.. can’t wait to get started!!
Count me in…I am new to crocheting and can’t wait to learn new techniques. I have already ordered my yarn.

Sign me up, please!
I’d like to try this as a baby afghan using Softee Baby. Any suggestions on stitch, or hook size adjustments?
Softee Baby is a lightweight yarn so your afghan will be much smaller (I’d guess around 4 or 5 inches square.) You could try using a double strand and the 5.5 mm hook which would make the squares about the same size as they’ll be with Softee Chunky. Basically you want to get as close to the gauge as possible for good results – 11 sc and 12 rows = 4 inches (10 cm)
Oops! I meant your blocks will each be about 4 or 5 inches square not that your afghan will be 5 inches square – lol. Our blocks will be 8 inches square. Of course you can make your afghan smaller if you wish to – it’s your choice.
Funny! I was imagining that teeny-tiny blanket, crocheted with thread.
Thank you.
This will be my first. Love mysteries. My company is having me do the United Way again this year. Really thinking about selling waffle tickets for the Mystery Afghan. Just a little more excitement added to the mystery. Sep. 22, please hurry!
Found out that I can’t do waffle tickets, so I put it into a Silent Auction instead.

Would like to choose different contrasting colors and am wondering how successful I’ll be not knowing how the colors relate to each other in a square. Is every color in every square? Some squares just perhaps 4 colors? I know … I’m probably messing up the ‘mystery’ part of this fun project … but can you help me at all without spoiling that part??
Some squares are a single colour while some use several colours so they’ll probably look great – just choose colours that you like together.
Can’t wait to start! I’m in

Sign me up! Can’t wait to see the finished project!
Sounds like fun, looking forward to it.
I am wanting to do my Afghan in the colors of the Summerset Ombre.
Has anyone seen this yarn in person to recommend the matching solids? I can make out the cameo and wine. Its the whites and greens I am not sure of. Is it Grass or Fern, and the white is natural or linen? I really wish the would put it in the description when you buying it online.
Hi Terese –
The closest solids for Summerset Ombre would be Fern and Natural. The red in Summerset Ombre is actually closer to Rouge.
Thanks so much for your help. I am off to make my purchase happy as a clam!
This sounds like so much fun.
Think I am going for :6 Summerset Ombre
7 Fern
2 Grass
2Cameo
2 Rouge, Hope this works out in the end!
Please sign me up, would love this project!
Sounds great! I love a mystery – with a beautiful ending, no less! Sign me up, please.

Sign me up ! I can’t wait to get started !
Sign me up for it! I have not crocheted in years – mostly knitting – but have been thinking it would be fun to do a crochet project!
Just ordered my yarn…I must be crazy! Just what I need is another PROJECT between now and Christmas! But this sounds like a lot of fun, so I didn’t want to miss out. I’m going to try to do this on my lunch hour so as not to interfere with all the other sewing/quilting/knitting projects I’m working on at night! Can’t wait to get started.
Sign me up, too.
Who can resist a good mystery AND a crochet project?
I am in!
=D
I’m in.
Here I am signing up for another project. Haven’t crocheted in a long time, but this sounds like fun.
Trying to figure out the blog. Can’t find where I can receive just the clue info. Thought I read somewhere in FAQ that there was a button for this, but I don’t find a button to sign up for the clues.
I just hope the info comes in the e-newsletter so I don’t miss anything.
I’m new to the blog too. I think the clue will just be in the blog on Sept 22nd. I’m sure they’ll make it easy for us to find as we’re all anxious to start. I think it would be fun to have an idea of how many people are doing the project and where everyone is from! I need some crochet buddies!
Sounds like fun. I have ordered my yarn and can’t wait to get started.
This sounds interesting ….I am a little worried about “clues” though. Not sure if I will be able to decipher them.
that’s what we’re all here for! To help each other!
You don’t need to worry about deciphering the clues – they’re written in plain English and symbol charts too so no ‘codes’ are involved.
Looking forward to doing this!
Sign me up…I’ll give it a try. Been alongtime since I’ve crocheted.
I did the Knit-Along and I really enjoyed it. Can’t wait to get started on this one.

Ordering some this site is going to make things a lot easier. I’ve had trouble finding the right amounts in certain colors and had to store-hop to try to get enough of ANY color just to get enough.
Thanks Bernat for making them available..really handy !

Just getting back into crocheting now that I have retired so this sounds like an excellent way to do it.

I’ve decided to join in, even through I am just a beginner with crochet. I’ll be making a smaller blanket – just one or two squares of each design. My baby blanket will be made with Bernat Baby Coordinates Chunky. Wish me luck!

Really looking forward to this one

I would love to do this. It sounds like fun!
I’m in!! I cannot wait!
I did the Knit a long last year as a beginner knitter, my confidence and ability to knit increased tremendously. I feel I can do almost any knitted project now. When I heard several months ago that there would be a crochet along I taught myself how to crochet. I’ve got the basics down and now I’m ready for this CAL. So excited. I already ordered my yarn and it has already shipped.
Sign me up. This is going to be a great Christmas gift for someone who needs it. Thanks for the fun project.
Sounds fun!

My first mystery crochet along, I can hardly wait.
Signing up to try this! Looking forward to trying something new!
I did the Mystery Kal last fall and loved every minute of it. The whole family is enjoying the afghan. I knit more than crochet, this CAL is a good reason to brush up on my crocheting skills. Can’t wait…September 22nd seem so far away ;D
I’m a knitter but I have always wanted to crochet, as well. This is a good time to give a try.
Sign me up. Am going to get my daughter-in-law to do it with me. We will be ordering our yarn today.
I’m looking forward to the challenge. I’m a knitter so I will need the “How to Crochet” on my lap most of the time. This will be fun!

Will the squares be done in order so we can sew them together as we go, or will the clues be random squares?
Hi Susan –
You won’t know how to assemble the clues until the very end. You won’t be able to sew them together as you go.
Darn, I was hoping to “sew as we go”! Thanks for the quick reply.
I’m the most nervous about the “sewing together” part. The only other afghan I ever made in squares was a baby afghan and I guess I didn’t know what I was doing or did it wrong because it fell apart after being washed several times. I know I’m going to need help with that! I’m very excited for the challenge though!
Quelle disaster! But we’re going to give you plenty of help with the assembly. You won’t have any more problems in future. (And you’ll have lots of confidence for future projects too!)
I love a good mystery! This will be my first crochet along, have ordered the yarn and am gathering friends to join us. Thanks for a fun project to look forward to . . can’t wait!
Between the Afghan I need to finish the border on, and the other one half way done (Christmas present) I’m going to try to fit this one in too! I’ve never made a granny square blanket because I have trouble fitting all the blocks together. Now is as good a time as any to learn, right?
Sign me up!! Ordering my yarn today!!

I learned to knit with the Mystery Afghan Knit-a-long last year.
Since I am teaching several friends to crochet, I have recommended that they join the Crochet-a-long! I just ordered my yarn and can’t wait to get started!
A mystery! How mysterious?????
it will be very mysterious – this is not your everyday afghan – believe me! I was amazed when I saw the finished item and I doubt that very many of you will be able to guess in advance how it will turn out. Are there any Sherlock Holmes types out there????
This sounds so mysterious. I am looking forward to it.
Thank you Bernat for your different yarns and patterns. Keep up the good work.
Sign me up! So excited!
Looking forward to this. It will be my first CAL like many others who have posted already. 9/22 seems far away…

Please sign me up! I am looking forward to working on this with all of you! The only problem is I can’t decide what colors to order!! Purples and pinks? Reds and greens for Christmas? Purple and red — the Red Hat colors?
I live in Hawthorne, NJ. Anyone else here from NJ?
Happy Crocheting Everyone!
Sign me up too, please!
I’m so thrilled that so many of you from from so many places are getting involved in this fun adventure – our very own Magical Mystery Tour of the crochet universe! (Yeah — Beatles fan.) Wouldn’t it be great if we had at least one participant from every continent? (Well — maybe not Antarctica. I suspect that not a lot of penguins crochet and I’m sure it’s hard to find yarn shops there.) But we’ve already got several from Europe, Australia, Africa and South America (and of course lots from North America.) Where’s our Asian representative?
I can hardly wait to get started and get to know some of you over the next few months and — of course — see your finished afghans! They can’t help but be great because the clues are so terrific. The designers have done a great job on this one and produced a truly unique afghan. (This is not your usual squares repeated in orderly rows – you will be intrigued by this one.) There’s something for everyone in this mystery and those of you who want to improve your skills and learn some professional tips and tricks have come to the right place. I’ve been crocheting since 1966 and have been a professional designer since 1997. (BTW – I had nothing to do with designing this afghan – no pats on the back for me here,) So — don’t be scared — jump in and take part — you won’t regret it when you see the finished project.
I’m trying to respond personally to as many of you as possible but time is unforgiving I’m afraid — so if I don’t respond to your specific post — please forgive me and check the other posts – some of the questions are repeats and you’ll find the answers elsewhere or in FAQ. Believe me — I personally read all your posts and will respond to as many as I can before I doze off at the keyboard.
Happy crocheting to all of you! See you on the 22nd!
Since many people are wanting to know where people are from, I think it would be a great idea to have an online map of the world and everyone could stick pins to show where they’re doing the Crochet Along.
I’ve seen an interactive map on another site before, to show where participants were from. I have no idea how they did it. I’m not sure but I think it was with Google Maps.
Just an idea.
Rhonda,
I ordered white, grass, teal, lavender and aqua. It just came and I’m a bit dissapointed. The Teal and Aqua are nothing like the color my screen shows. All the rest of the colors are pretty true. My daughter-in-law ordered some yarn also and all her colors (except the Teal) were right on. I’m not sure what to do now, as I really don’t like the Teal and Aqua with my other colors. Have you rec’d yours yet?
Laura, Help! My colors aren’t working together, well, some are but I’m not happy with the Teal and the Aqua. The Aqua is is more of a turquise than what my computer and printout shows. It’s kind of jarring with my other colors, white, grass, lavender and that brings me to the Teal. It doesn’t look anything like the picture, big mistake, it’s the most yarn of any and doesn’t look like it belongs at all. I looked locally for the Bernat yarn and couldn’t find much of a selection of colors (or quantity) so ordered online. Do you think Faded Denim or Grey Heather could be a good match with my colors, and grape instead of Agua? I’m afraid to order more online without some guidance. Thanks
Hi Jennifer –
I just polled the majority of the Bernat Design Studio, and came up with two color schemes that were very popular with the designers.
First: Grass, Lavender, White, Grape, Grey Heather
Second: Grass, Lavender, White, Teal, Grey Heather
Hope this helps!
Thanks so much. I I like the grape and grey heather combo. I actually have both colors from my daughter-in-laws order so I can see how it would look. Now I’m excited! Can’t wait to start.
I received notice that the yarn for my order (plus my mom’s and sister’s) is on the way, but the forest is backordered…will it be here in time or do my mom and myself need to quickly find and order another color???
My 15 year old daughter & I are excited to start this project. We are going to buy our yarn this weekend…We will have a mother daughter night every Wednesday & start our new clue together. So looking forward to it…should be a lot of fun!
That is so neat that you and your daughter are doing this together!! I can’t wait until my daughter gets old enough to learn to crochet so we can do a CAL together.
Sign me up! My mom and I will be doing this…I’ve only done basic crocheting so she’s going to help me with this one.
Oh, I can’t wait! I’m going to make this hubby’s big Christmas gift!
I am so ready for this to start! I teach so this will be the project that helps me keep my sanity this semester!
I’m in. The yarn is ordered. Bring it on.
I’m in
.
Gonna go buy my yarn tomorrow. Got some coupons that will work on top of a sale!
WOOT!
Heather
All right, I’m sucked in. The last thing I need is more yarn, but I can’t resist. So intriguing! I can’t wait to see it unfold. Guessing on the colors of yarn… trying to imagine what looks good together… seeing something come of it… this is the ultimate fun of creating in yarn. I just hope I can keep the cats out of it! They think everything I make is just for them! Warm, cuddly, even in the middle of summer. Gotta luv um.
you can never have too much yarn!
I want to sign up for the mystery afghan
Thanks
I just got my yarn in yesterday! I’m ready! We should start now! : )
I’m willing to give this a try. Sign me up, too, please.
I’ll give it a go!
I love a good mystery! I’ve ordered my yarn and I’m ready to get started!
My first mystery project! Ordered the yarn, changed one color, the lavender to pumpkin, and convinced a friend to join in the project too.
So Joyce and Dawna are in and excited to begin.
How appropriate to use pumpkin in your afghan. I wish I’d thought of that. I live in San Carlos, just over the hill from you.
Greetings from San Diego! Glad to see some CA neighbors on the CAL. I’m using orange in mine as well. I’m going with white, dusty medium blue, light butter yellow, golden orange and sage green. Colors are nice warm tones and not too bright. Anxiously waiting for 9/22.
The e-mail about this CAL along has been haunting me in my SLEEP, so count me in!
I crochet at lot, this sounds like fun. Bought my yarn yesteday at local store.Ready for the 22nd.
I’m in…..sign me up!

Is there anyone from Maple Ridge BC Canada on this crochet along? If so lets connect. I am so looking forward to this adventure and mystery.
Hi
I am from Victoria? Just over the water. Let’s connect via email?
Linda
I’m not sure where Maple Ridge is, my dad lives in Rossland. I’m in London ON and can’t wait to get started. My Mom and sister might join in too, it seems like a lot of others are too.
Sign me up! Now I just have to figure out how to tell my hubby that this is a necessary expense! LOL
Sign me up, please. I’ve raided my stash – darn! Gonna have to buy more yarn for this one. Can’t wait to begin.

I’m in! Just purchased yarn! None of the colors selected, ventured out on my own choices. Can’t wait to see how this turns out. Took crochet classes in June and got hooked. Looking forward to this adventure/learning experience. Will probably need some hand holding here. Thanks so much for hosting Bernat folks.
Tom
Looking forward to it. Thinks it’s exciting. Sign me up.
I’m in! This will be my first! I need a new project at work since they will be taking our internet away soon…LOL
This is so exciting – exhilarating even. I can’t wait!
I would like to be included in your Bernat Mystery Crochet Afghan series of instructions and I don’t know how to get into it. Please let me know if that’s possible. I may order the yarn on-line if possible and I know thru a friend that we must order by 9-4-10. Thank you.
Hi Florence –
The instructions aren’t available yet. They will be released weekly, clue by clue, starting on September 22. Come back here, to blog.Bernat.com to get your clues. See you then!
I’d like to be with you for this adventure but in Belgium, I can’t buy Bernat yarn…. Is it possible to take part even though? Excuse me for my bad english but I learned it at school… a long long time ago…
Hi Chantal –
You can participate in the CAL using any yarn you like! We don’t allow discussions of our competitors on the blog, but that doesn’t mean you cant crochet with them.
I don’t really need another project to work on, but my curiosity has been perked and so count me in.
Looking forward to starting the mystery afghan.
Thanks
MLou
Love these types of crafting!!

Oh God, I’m scared…haven’t finished a crochet project yet!

My friend and I will be crocheting along from Canada. We just picked up our yarn today. We chose very differt colors so I am excited to see how each of them will turn out!
Maybe I can finish this, I am looking forward to particpating
I am a quilter and familiar with block of the month but never did anything like this crocheting. Should be fun and a change.
I’m a quilter, too. I do love to knit and crochet as well. I am really just basic – basic. I am looking forward to learning some new stitches. And this blogging thing is new as well… Time this old dog learned some new tricks, eh??
Sounds great!
Sounds like a great idea
I’ll give it a try!

This sounds like so much fun. Can’t wait.
Ordered my yarn and can’t wait for the clues to start!
Excited about this project
Done many baby blankets but not a larger one. Even got my mom and sister to do this project with me – yarn is ordered and waiting to get started!
Is leaving a comment all I have to do to sign up? Being part of a ‘blog’ is new to me and will probably present the biggest challenge of this project

Hey “neighbor”…….I’m in Wisconsin and will be doing the CAL and can’t wait. Also have a co-worked “hooked” now too. Should be fun!

I’m in! Just placed the order for my yarn. This is gonna be fun!
Never tried anything like this, but I’m going to go for it. I may not use the colors you have selected. But thanks for the invitation.

Carol
Can’t wait to start. A friend gave me a huge stash of yarn some time ago including Bernat Softee Chunky. I only have to actually purchase 4 balls.
Sign me up, have my yarn ordered and can’t wait, really enjoyed the one last fall.
I am a newbie… looking forward to learning
I would like to be included in the crochet-a-long. Thanks!!!

I want to try this so please sign me up. I ordered my yarn. I usually have trouble finishing projects so hopefully I will finish this one. I can’t wait to get started.
Nice to see Donna Lynne and others back from the KAL. Can’t wait to crochet with you and all the newcomers too. Will have to look for colours. Think this calls for a detour to Listowel when I take DD #2 to university. I love any excuse to look at yarn stores!
Good to see you back, Knitting Bee!
Can’t wait!! Ordered my yarn. Ready to go!
I can’t wait

yes I can’t wait
I want to join in The CAL. I tried to order the yarn from Bernat and get the 25% discount. I cannot get it to work.I keep getting the message to put in Chunky19. There is nowhere to put this complete the order. The order comes to ) and nothing in the cart.Very frustrating.
code is not working
I’m usually a casual observer of life. But this game sounds fun. I’ll be on the playing field.
Count me in! I love mysteries!
Count me in on this! I’m looking forward to picking colors and, of course, seeing the end result!
First time I have ever joined in on a project like this. It sounds like fun – can’t wait to start!
Just went back and read ALL the posts. If this goes anything like the KAL, you newbies have nothing to fear. I learned to knit through the KAL last year with LOTS of help from Bernat and the other knitters!
Anyone out there from Arlington, Texas or nearby?
Glen Rose, Tx…may need to get up with you for lunch one day if I get tangled up and can’t get a direction right !!
No problem, Kay! I have been crocheting for about 40 years, and have taught many others!
I think I will try – sounds like fun!
So excited, yarn is ordered
I’d love to try this out, never done a CAL before so this would be fun. Now I just need to find a way to get some money to buy the yarn…hehe
Sign me and my sister Sharon up for the mystery crochet along!!
What a wonderful project! Sounds like fun. Please sign me up.
Sounds exciting. Sign me up.
I’m game. I’m always looking for new patterns. Sign me up.
I would like to join in, but I can’t afford to buy all that yarn. I do have a huge stash of worsted weight yarn, so I guess I can use that and just have a smaller finished afghan.
Sign me up! I’m deployed and by the time this crochet-a-long is done, I should have a nice afghan to cover up with on the plane trip home! Supplies ordered and ready to get started.
Thank you, Gayle!!!!!
I hope you come home soon and safely. You are in my prayers.
Let me know if there is anything I can do for you.
Can’t wait to get started!

I’m in. This sounds great
Count me in! I’m from Deux-Montagnes province of Quebec.
I was just looking for a new pattern. Will it be easy for someone who never used an English pattern?
Bernat’s website is easily translated en francais from popular search engines on the internet. Have good directions for most stitches. Would probably help you to understand any terms in the English pattern.
can’t wait to start.
im not in the states so i wont be enetering the contest but i love the idea for this CAL! count me in!
I bought my yarn. Can’t wait to get started!!!

I just ordered my yarn, wool instead of Bernat Chunky, cost twice as much, but I love working with wool. I, like many others, have never done a CAL – should be fun!
Aw come on……I just signed up and can’t get the discount. The CAL hasn’t even started yet – how ’bout extending the offer?
Looking forward to working on this project!
What fun… I already picked out my colors. It will be a Christmas (hopefully) present for my mom

count me in. i am excited about reviving my old crocheting skills.
Yarn ordered and waiting for the start. I have been “warming up” with some granny squares the last couple of days to see if I remembered how to follow pattern instructions. I had forgotten how fun crocheting is!
This really sounds interesting and I have never done anything like this before. Sometimes I do get a little stuck and want some advice. It will be great to have people I can ask. Sign me up!
Sign me up!!!
Sounds fun sign me up
My sister did the knit along, can’t wait fort this to start. Sign me up
This should be an experience! lol – a good one I hope. I’m new to crochet but Mom or one of my sisters will be happy to help me out if (when) I get stuck. At least crochet is easier to undo. When you undo a row of knitting you tink (knit spelled backwards). What’s the term for UN-crocheting? lol – might as well learn it now! When I got my yarn I ended up 2 balls short of the 7 ball colour (Fern?) so I’m hoping I’ll be able to get around that issue without too much trouble since we will be crocheting squares.
Good Luck Everyone
I use “frogging” as a term for un-crocheting because you have to rip-it.
I’ll try
OK, I do not know where I am going to find the time between work or school but I am interested to try. I have crochet two afghans, one was a star for my first grandbaby and circle to square creation I made from three 12 square patterns. Good luck all.
I can’t wait to try a quilt like this as a crochetted piece–I’ve only ever done them quilting. Way to go Bernat!!
I can’t wait to start! I have been looking for a winter project, and this sounds like the perfect thing. I’m on my way to get the yarn now! Crochet on!
My yarn came today….can’t wait!!!!!
I am going with … fern, grass, forest, grape and lavender. The colors look awesome together.
From Wisconsin.
I got my yarn today. I have done a lot of crocheting but never in a CAL. Looking forward to all the companions at yarns.
From Las Vegas, Nevada
I’m from Wisconsin too and can’t wait to start the project. I also got a co-worker involved and a Facebook friend from Australia! Should be a blast!
sign me up, what’s another project! Three of us who crochet together locally are going to do this, should be fun.
I’ve ordered yarn for myself and my niece – we’re looking forward to working on this project ‘together’ via long distance!
cant wait to start I told my best friend about this being that we both crochect and we are going to do this together

I had fun with the KAL and I’m inIterested in giving this a try, but I’m agonizing over the yarn choices. It is so hard to pick when you don’k know how the colors “interact” with each other! It seems like there are lots more people signing up for this than the KAL. Good Luck everyone. Happy stitching
I agree with you on the difficulty of choosing the colors!! LOL! I agonized for days, made several trips to the craft store to look at colors, and, basically, drove my family crazy!!! I guess that’s part of the fun, though… .

Any one here from east of Toronto, Ontario. I am in Whitby. Love the store in Listowel, got my yarn there last year for another project, but will use it for the mystery CAL. Am going to use worsted weight Patons Decor, so my blocks will be a little smaller than 8″. Can’t wait for the 22nd!
Hi Judy,
I live in Oshawa on the Whitby border. Haven’t decided on using stash from last trip or making a detour when I go down to see DD#2 at UW for her birthday. They have the Softee Chunky on sale this month. Very dangerous to subscribe to newsletter as I am often tempted to detour and really should use the yarn I already have.
Love that outlet store. I bought my yarn at Len’s Mill Store here in London. They had all the colours and more, I stayed with the suggested colours, just changed lavender to rouge. Eleven days and counting.
I’m ready! A lot of my work is a mystery…each item is unique!Hoping to get my Thursday night ladies to join in as well!
This sounds like fun! Sign me up!
Hoping I can do 2 baby blankets instead of full size afghan. Maybe?
Sign me up!
Greetings from Upstate NY and glad to see familiar names from the KAL. Excited, but nervous. Loved the KAL and now will try this. I can crochet enough for simple projects (made my son in law a pirate can cozy for Father’s Day) but have never tried anything of this magnitude. Reminder to self – one row at a time!
This sounds like fun. I’ve never made an Afghan before, I taught myself to crochet and I’m still learning. I like the idea that the skils will progress as we continue to make the project. Really excited to start, just wondering what colors I want to choose!!
I would really like to give it a try! Please sign me up.
Thank you!
I’m in – got a newbie to do it too.
Count me in! Will be recovering from surgery the entire month of November, so this should help keep me busy!
sign me up. went and bought my yarn today. i’m so ready!!!!
My daughter, Debbie, and I are IN! She’s just learning, and this will be our first-ever project to work on together. We’re excited! I ordered her yarn and mine at the same time — only had to pay one $12.95 shipping charge that way. YAY! This will give us an excuse to get together regularly, at least for an hour or two. I did some swaps when I first got on line about 10 or 12 years ago, but I’ve never done a CAL, and it sounds like FUN!
I’m going to give it a try even though I’m not very good at crocheting. Hope y’all can help me along!
Sign me up. From Port Hope, Ontario

Count me in too! There’s nothing like a nice cozy afghan for crisp cool fall mornings and evenings.

Is it to late to order the yarn? None of the stores in my area carry it.
I am so excited to start.
Hi Paula – You can still order the yarn, but the sale is no longer available. You’d have to order at full price.
Got Hook…..Ordered Yarn……Bring it On!!!!
here we go!
I signed up to be able to crochet along with my daughters. I am an experienced crotcher, however, they are just learning.
