Mystery Afghan Knit-Along – We have a Winner!

Thanks again to everyone who made the Bernat Knit-Along so successful! We learned so much from all of you, and hope you learned something too.

And now, the moment you’ve all been waiting for, the winner of the Mystery Afghan Knit-Along contest is…

Joyce from Lancaster, California!

Congratulations Joyce!

Joyce was a brand new knitter – and now she has completed this amazing blanket and will be receiving enough yarn to make another one!

Joyce's blanket - knit in Bernat Satin - forest mist heather, bordeaux, fern, silk

From Joyce: “i want to thank you for providing this knit a long to us. this was the first knit project i have ever done. when i started all i know  to knit was a knit stitch. i didn’t even know how to do a purl stitch. so thank you for showing us a lot of different stitches and patterns. i cant wait for the next one.”

We had so many amazing entries, and are inspired by the sense of community we saw on the Bernat Blog. We hope to keep that going in the future.

    • Nikki Condra says:

Congratulations!! I just wanted to let Joyce know that she was not the only one who made the afghan in Lancaster, CA. I got behind very early on, and I’m still working on the last of my 7th squares. But I’ve started blocking the squares, and it will be finished!

To Bernat, I loved the idea of this project from the first moment I discovered it. I learned to knit in college back in the 1960′s, but I’d quit for many years. Now I’ll be retiring in 2 months, and I know I’ll never be bored!

Thank you so much for the fun.

  6. karen says:

      Hi Beverley -
We had 47 entries this time.

      • Joan says:

Is it too late for me to send a picture of my afghan? I just finished it. I know the contest is over but Im sure there are alot of us who finished late and would love to see our afghans on your site.

        • bernatyarns says:

Hi Joan and others who haven’t submitted an afghan image yet -

Feel free to send in a photo of your finished afghan! When we have a few we’ll put up another post showing off your remarkable work.

          • knitting bee says:

I would love to see a gallery of everyone’s work. I did put my entry in before deadline, but I am sure that there are many others who were working online that are finished. Would love to have seen all the entries as well as those that finished late. Enjoyed working with everyone and would love to see the results, especially of those that were struggling.

  8. Shandeh says:

    Congratulations Joyce!

  9. Manon says:

    Congratulations Joyce!

  10. knitting bee says:

Congrats to Joyce, I hope you continued to be inspired to knit.

I think anyone who participated should be congratulated. We all had a great sense of community sharing stories, tips and help.
When I wanted to make my blanket an extra row longer to cover hubby’s feet, my inspiration was remembering everyone’s comments on clue 4 about how they liked the back side as well or better. So I knit another set and used the other side.

Everyone who finished this lovely project was a winner. They all looked beautiful.

  11. Gina says:

    Congrats to Joyce!!!

You were brave to take this project on as a beginner knitter.

  12. Eva says:

You have inspired me. I can knit but only know the most basic of crochet stitches and haven’t really been abale to follow crochet patterns. I am going to join in the C-A-L and hope my efforts end up half as well as Joyce’s. Something in the fall to look forward to.

  13. Aunt Ginny says:

I’m so happy for you Joyce!!! You really did a great job. Since we live so far away from each other, these projects are a nice way of keeping in touch and doing something together.
I can’t wait for the crochetalong!!

    keep on knittin’
    love
    Your big sis :-)

  14. Bonny says:

YEA Joyce !!! Congratulations. Hae you picked out your free pattern and yarn? Please let us know what you choose for your prize.

  15. Joyce from Cal says:

Hi Happy Knitters,(soon to be crocheters)
I am looking at a crochet pattern called Graphic Blocks in the Home Sweet Home patten book. My son is going to college and is almost done with his AA degree in Computer Graphic Design. I thought this would be fitting for him. Let me know what you think?

Nikki< that's great that you live here in Lancaster. Cant wait to see your afghan. I got behind also. I finish it 3 or 4 days before the do date. Do you know of any gathering for knitting and crocheting?

    Eva< GO FOR IT!!!!!

Thanks again to all of your wonderful comments. they really do mean a lot to me.

  16. kayro says:

Congratulations Joyce, you did a great job. Thanks to Bernat, as
a beginner knitter, I learned SO much, most importantly, I gained
the confidence to try patterns that used to be overlooked very quickly. I can’t wait till we do the CAL !!

  17. Peggy says:

It was great fun to participate in the KAL. The helpful ideas and comments posted by my fellow knitters were great. I have a mental block about crochet, but with all the support out there I think I’ll just give the Crochet-Along a try.

    Contgratulations, Joyce!

  18. Kristin says:

Everything is beautiful! I’m so so anxious for the crochet afghan!

  19. Ella says:

    To Joyce from California:
I found that pattern( Graphic Blocks) on another yarn site.
The pattern is free. Just enter- crochet pattern/graphic block- into the search area and it is at the top of the choices. I checked it out and am going to get the pattern myself and try it. Of course I will use Bernat yarn! Good luck with it!

  20. Donna Lynne says:

    Way to go, Joyce!!!!
As a beginner knitter myself, I am thrilled that a beginner won! I am so glad you stuck it out, too!

I learned to knit on this project, and have already put my new skills to use making a hat and scarf for my son-in-law. I can’t wait for the next KAL!

As for the CAL, I have been crocheting for almost 40 years and am very interested in reading the blogs from the beginner crocheters. I know they will only help me teach crochet better!

  21. Ella's Grammoo says:

    Joyce,
Congrats on a job well done! I admire your sticking with it and you certainly deserved to win.

Peggy, I, too, have a mental thing about crocheting. I can do the very basics but I think this CAL will be a great opportunity to step outside my comfort zone, and if other novices can do such a great job, so can I! So bring it on, Bernat…I’m ready!

  22. Angie says:

I also got started late on this project…after Xmas!! My squares are all done, and I started stitching them together a couple weeks ago… but then I got side-tracked making a baby blanket for my neighboer!! Too many projects… so little time!! :)

I just learned to crochet last fall, so I’ll be a beginner on that one… looking forward to it!

  23. Joyce from Cal says:

    Hi to all,

Just wanted to update you all on what i chose for my free pattern. i had a hard time picking just one. i liked so many. i went with the graphic blocks. I’m going to make it for my son. When I get started I will post picture’s as i do the afghan. i want all of you to be a part of it, because without everyone’s helpful hints i wouldn’t have made it through the KAL. So in my books everyone is a winner. I’m just very thankful.

  24. Joyce from Cal says:

Hi everyone, just wanted to let you all know that i got my pattern and yarn last night. i’m very excited about this afghan. i will keep you all posted as i go. thanks again to everyone with the helpful hints and ideas. thanks again to bernat for providing this KAL can’t wait til September.
